Quick answer

Lohvan, also spelled Lohban or Lauhavan, is one of the twelve forests of Braj, across the Yamuna from Mathura and close to the Gokul and Mahavan side, roughly 10 km from Mathura city. Its name carries two traditions: a popular one in which Krishna slew the iron demon Lohasura (Lohjanghasur) here while grazing his cows, and a scriptural one in which the sage Lohajangha performed great austerities here to attain Braj. Lohvan is remembered for Krishna’s boating pastime with the gopis on the Yamuna, and pilgrims visit the Krishna Kund, Lohasura’s cave and the Shri Gopinath shrine. Entry is free. To include Lohvan in your Braj visit, call or WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Most pilgrims in Braj never cross the Yamuna to the quiet forests of the Gokul side, and so they miss Lohvan, a grove thick with old stories. Here Krishna grazed his cows with his friends, pulled one of his most charming tricks on the gopis with a leaking boat, and, the people say, rid the forest of an iron demon. Here, from a guide born in Gokul next door, is the verified story, the sites to see, the timings and how to reach it, with the key details in tables. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour package, which can include the Gokul side.

The story: two traditions behind the name

Lohvan is one of those Braj places where two streams of memory meet, and an honest guide tells you both.

The popular tradition is that the forest is named after the iron demon Lohasura, or Lohjanghasur, the “iron-thighed” one. As Krishna grazed his cows here with his cowherd friends, the demon came to attack, and Krishna killed him on the spot. People still point out a cave said to be Lohasura’s. It is a story of the same kind as so many of Krishna’s childhood deeds: the forest made safe for the cows and the children.

The scriptural tradition, carried in the Vayu and Adi Varaha Puranas, names not a demon but a sage, Lohajangha, who performed intense austerities here to win a place in Braj. In this telling Lohvan is the ninth of the twelve forests, the Lohajangha van, and the black deity worshipped here is the sage himself, installed by the demigods. The verses say the forest destroys all sins.

Both names are old and both are loved, and standing in the grove you need not choose. For the wider circle of Krishna’s childhood on this side of the river, see our guide to Gokul and Chintaharan Mahadev.

The boat pastime of Lohvan

The sweetest memory of Lohvan is not a battle at all. At a ghat on the Yamuna here, the Bhakti-Ratnakar tells, Krishna once disguised himself as a boatman to ferry the gopis across the river. Midway, he pretended the boat was leaking and gravely asked the gopis to lighten it by throwing their pots of milk and butter overboard, teasing them until they laughed and begged him to simply take them across. It is one of the gentlest and most playful of all the Braj pastimes, and the ghat is still shown to pilgrims.

Takeaway: come to Lohvan for the quiet and the stories, not for grandeur. It rewards the pilgrim who likes to stand in a grove and imagine the cows, the boys and the river.

What pilgrims see

Lohvan is a cluster of simple, sacred spots rather than one great temple. The main things pilgrims seek out are the Krishna Kund, the sacred tank of the grove; the cave said to be Lohasura’s; and the Shri Gopinath shrine, with the black deity of the sage Lohjangha. Close by lies the village of Ayore (Ayor), where tradition says Nanda Baba and Yashoda were reunited with Krishna after he slew the demon Dantavakra. A calm hour lets you take them in without hurry.

Location and how to reach

Lohvan lies across the Yamuna from Mathura, on the Gokul and Mahavan side, a short way off the Mathura to Gokul road.

From Distance and mode
Gokul / Mahavan A short drive on the same side of the Yamuna
Mathura Junction About 10 km, by taxi or auto
Vrindavan About 25 km, by taxi
Govardhan About 35 km
Delhi About 160 km, 3 to 4 hours via the Yamuna Expressway
Nearest airports Agra (60 km), Delhi (160 km)

Lohvan is best reached by car as part of a Gokul and Mahavan route, since public transport into the grove is limited. Most pilgrims pair it with Gokul and the Mahavan side. Our Gokul and Govardhan combo tour can include it.

Best time to visit

October to March is the comfortable season across Braj, and a cool morning in the quiet grove is the best time to come. Janmashtami and the Krishna festivals bring more visitors to the whole Gokul side. The summer, April to June, is hot and the open forest gives little shade, so if you must come then, come at first light. For the rural calm that is Lohvan’s whole charm, choose an ordinary weekday morning.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Gokul, next door. Lohvan is a rural forest grove, not a set-up pilgrim centre. The shrines are simple, the signage is poor, the lanes are narrow, and you will not find polished facilities or easy public transport. Come by car, carry your own water, and do not arrive late in the day, when the grove empties and transport thins out.

This is also a place where a local guide genuinely helps, because the sites are scattered and the stories are what bring them alive; without them Lohvan can feel like just a field and a tank. Take a knowledgeable person, or come with us, and the grove opens up. And as everywhere in Braj, give only what your heart wishes to anyone offering a ritual; nothing is required to stand where Krishna grazed his cows.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, a short way from Lohvan, so these quiet forests are home ground for me. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We bring you by car at a calm hour, find the scattered sites of the grove, tell both traditions of the name and the lovely boat pastime on the ground, and fold Lohvan into a proper Gokul and Mahavan route. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: do Lohvan as part of the Gokul and Mahavan side, all on one bank of the Yamuna, rather than as a separate trip. Come in the morning, take a guide who knows the grove, and let the river and the cow-grazing stories set the pace.
