The question I hear most often on the phone before a Braj yatra is: how far is Govardhan from Vrindavan can I do both in a day? The honest answer is yes but only if you know the exact routes, realistic travel times and the sequence that avoids Mathura’s peak-hour traffic between 9 AM and 11 AM.
I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi, founder of Experience My India. I have personally guided over 50,000 pilgrims through the Braj circuit Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon Gokul. The Govardhan to Vrindavan distance is 22.6 km by road and takes 45 minutes on a normal weekday. But there is a lot more that goes into planning this leg of the yatra than a single Google Maps number.
This guide covers the exact road distances, all route options, taxi costs, Govardhan Parikrama planning, the mandir list along the parikrama route and how Experience My India combines both destinations into one smooth, well-timed itinerary. Call +91-7302265809 if you want to skip the planning and just confirm your dates.
Govardhan to Vrindavan The Exact Distance and Best Routes
There are three road routes between Govardhan and Vrindavan. All three pass through or near Mathura city. Here is what Google Maps shows and what reality on the ground actually looks like:
| Route | Distance | Estimated Time | Road Condition | Best For |
| Route 1 (Best) Mathura–Govardhan Road | 22.6 km | 45 min | Good single carriageway, well maintained | Most visitors best balance of speed and road quality |
| Route 2 Govardhan Rd / Mathura–Deeg Marg | 24.0 km | 44 min | Some traffic near Mathura city | Alternative when Route 1 has a blockage |
| Route 3 Mathura–Deeg Marg + Govardhan Rd | 23.3 km | 44 min | Mixed semi-urban stretch near Mathura | If coming from eastern Mathura side |
Route 1 via Mathura–Govardhan Road is the standard recommendation. Despite being listed as the route with ‘usual traffic,’ it is the most predictable and the most direct. The road is a single two-lane carriageway through semi-rural Braj countryside paddy fields in monsoon, dry crop fields in winter. You pass through small villages and cross a few railway level crossings that can add 5–10 minutes if a train is passing.
Avoid this route between 9–11 AM on weekdays when school traffic and commercial vehicles create a slow-moving corridor near the Mathura urban edge. If you are doing Govardhan Parikrama in the morning, you will finish by noon and the Vrindavan leg can start at 12:30–1 PM which lines up perfectly with the temple belt’s afternoon gap, giving you a clean entry for the 4:30 PM evening darshan at Banke Bihari.
For all our Braj circuit tours, Experience My India uses Route 1 with driver briefings on checkpoint timing. See our 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour which includes Govardhan as a full day stop.
Complete Braj Distance Matrix Govardhan, Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana
Most pilgrims plan to cover multiple Braj destinations in one trip. Here is the complete point-to-point distance reference so you can build a realistic day plan:
| From → To | Road Distance | Drive Time (normal traffic) | Notes |
| Govardhan → Vrindavan | 22.6 km | 45 min | Best route via Mathura–Govardhan Rd |
| Govardhan → Mathura | 23 km | 40 min | Via Mathura–Govardhan Rd direct |
| Mathura → Govardhan | 23 km | 40–45 min | Same road, reverse direction |
| Vrindavan → Govardhan | 22.6 km | 45 min | Start before 9 AM or after 12 PM |
| Vrindavan → Mathura | 11 km | 20–30 min | Heavy traffic 8–10 AM |
| Govardhan → Barsana | 20 km | 40 min | Via Govardhan–Barsana Rd (State Hwy) |
| Vrindavan → Barsana | 45 km | 1 hr 15 min | Via Mathura–Govardhan Rd |
| Mathura → Barsana | 35 km | 55 min | Via Farah or Govardhan Road |
| Govardhan → Nandgaon | 13 km | 25 min | Via Govardhan–Nandgaon Road |
| Barsana → Nandgaon | 8 km | 15 min | The two linked yatra towns |
Practical note: These times assume a private car or auto-rickshaw under normal weekday traffic conditions. On weekends, the pilgrimage peak season (October–March)festivals like Janmashtami, Holi, Radhashtami, add 20–40 minutes to every leg. The Mathura urban zone is the consistent bottleneck; any route between Govardhan and Vrindavan that is under 25 km will pass through this zone.

What Is Govardhan? Why Every Braj Pilgrim Must Come Here
Govardhan is a town 22 km west of Mathura centred around the Govardhan Hill also called Giriraj. In the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger for seven days to protect the residents of Vrindavan from Indra’s floods. This single event makes Govardhan Hill the most physically tangible connection between the Krishna narrative and the Braj landscape. When you do parikrama around the hill, you are circumambulation the hill that Krishna himself lifted.
The Govardhan Hill is not a dramatic mountain, it is a low ridge of black rock, its highest point roughly 80 metres above the surrounding plain. It is shrinking: geologists have confirmed the hill is shrinking at roughly 1 inch per year, a process devotees consider sacred and do not attempt to reverse. The entire hill is considered the deity Giriraj himself in Vaishnavism you will see devotees touching the rock, carrying pieces home, prostrating along the parikrama path.
Govardhan is famous for:
- The 21 km Govardhan Parikrama the sacred circumambulation of the hill that draws pilgrims from across India, particularly on Ekadashi days and during Kartik month
- Manasi Ganga a sacred kund (water tank) believed to have emerged from Lord Krishna’s mind (manasa), located at the eastern end of Govardhan town
- Mukharvind Temple one of the most sacred spots on the parikrama route, housing the ‘face’ of Giriraj (the deity’s principal darshan point)
- Jatipura the western end of the parikrama where the Dauji temple sits and where many pilgrims begin their circuit
- Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are two sacred tanks 2 km east of Govardhan associated with Radha and Krishna. Bathing here on Bahula Ashtami is considered the equivalent of doing the full 84-kos Braj yatra
For the complete Braj circuit including Govardhan, see our 5 Days Braj Yatra Tour Package or call +91-7302265809 to discuss a customised route.
Govardhan Parikrama Full Route Guide with Mandir List
The Govardhan Parikrama is 21 km long and encircles Govardhan Hill. Most pilgrims take 6–8 hours on foot at a moderate devotional pace, including stops at key mandirs. The route is flat with no significant elevation changes and well paved for approximately 18 of the 21 km. The remaining 3 km near the back of the hill passes through a quieter village section with unpaved stretches.
Starting Point
Most pilgrims begin at Manasi Ganga in Govardhan town (eastern end). Alternatively, start from Jatipura (western end). The direction of circulation keeps Giriraj on your left throughout (anti-clockwise when viewed from above). Clockwise is not traditional.
Key Mandirs on the Govardhan Parikrama Route
| Mandir / Sacred Site | Location on Route | Significance | Time to Spend |
| Manasi Ganga | Start / eastern Govardhan | Sacred kund; Govardhan town centre | 20–30 min |
| Mukut Mukharvind Temple | Eastern section | Principal face darshan of Giriraj deity | 20–30 min |
| Brahma Kund | Eastern–northern transition | Sacred kund associated with Lord Brahma | 10–15 min |
| Apsara Kund | Northern section | Quiet kund; less crowded on weekdays | 10 min |
| Govind Kund | Northern midpoint | Where Indra performed abhishek of Krishna | 15–20 min |
| Punchari Ka Lautha | Northern–western transition | Ancient temple; major halt for pilgrims | 15–20 min |
| Jatipura Dauji Temple | Western end / Jatipura | Important Vaishnava temple; prasad available | 20–30 min |
| Dan Ghati Temple | Western section | Site where Krishna collected ‘tax’ (dan) from gopis | 15–20 min |
| Radha Kund & Shyam Kund | 2 km east of parikrama path | Most sacred kunds in all of Braj | 30–45 min |
| Kusum Sarovar | On parikrama path (NE section) | Octagonal sandstone stepped tank; architectural highlight | 15 min |
Govardhan Parikrama by Car / Vehicle
Vehicles are permitted on the outer road of the Govardhan Parikrama. Doing the parikrama by car covers the 21 km circuit in approximately 45–60 minutes with stops at major mandirs. However, the road nearest to the hill at several sections is pedestrian-only; you cannot drive directly past the hill at all points. Most pilgrims who are physically unable to walk the full route use an e-rickshaw or cycle-rickshaw on the outer circuit road, stopping at key points to approach the hill on foot.
Cost of Govardhan Parikrama by vehicle:
- Private auto-rickshaw for the full circuit: ₹400–₹600 (negotiate before starting)
- E-rickshaw (shared): ₹20–₹30 per person per stretch
- Private car with driver (if already booked with your tour): included in Experience My India packages
- Cycle-rickshaw (for a short section): ₹100–₹200
Experience My India’s 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour and 5 Days Braj Yatra Package both include Govardhan Parikrama as a dedicated half-day or full-day stop, with a Braj-born guide who knows each mandir’s timing and crowd pattern.
How to Reach Vrindavan from Govardhan All Transport Options
Once you have completed Govardhan Parikrama (or your Govardhan visit), getting to Vrindavan involves one of three options. Here is the practical breakdown:
| Transport Mode | Route Used | Time | Cost | Best For |
| Private Taxi / Cab | Mathura–Govardhan Rd (Route 1) | 45 min | ₹600–₹900 one-way | Families, senior pilgrims, those with luggage |
| Auto-Rickshaw (private) | Same as above | 55–70 min | ₹400–₹600 one-way | Solo pilgrims, small groups (2–3) |
| Shared Auto | Govardhan → Mathura → Vrindavan (two autos) | 1.5–2 hrs total | ₹40–₹80 per person | Budget pilgrims, no luggage |
| Bus (UP Roadways) | Govardhan → Mathura bus stand + transfer | 2–2.5 hrs total | ₹30–₹50 per person | Very budget; not recommended with luggage |
| Pre-arranged Tour Cab | Direct, no transfer | 45 min | Included in package | Best option no negotiation, timed itinerary |
The taxi fare from Mathura to Govardhan (starting from Mathura city or Mathura Junction station) runs approximately ₹400–₹600 one-way by private cab. App-based cabs (Ola, Uber) are available in Mathura city but rarely extend to Govardhan local taxi operators are more reliable for this 23 km stretch. If you are doing a day trip from Vrindavan to Govardhan and returning the same evening, a round-trip cab from Vrindavan costs approximately ₹1,200–₹1,800 depending on the cab category and waiting charges.
All Experience My India Braj packages include a private AC cab with a driver who knows the Govardhan–Vrindavan route, the parikrama drop-off points and the timing windows at each mandir. No negotiation, no uncertainty. Book via Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour or call +91-7302265809 for a custom itinerary.
Best Places to Visit in Govardhan
Beyond the parikrama route, these are the specific stops that most pilgrims find most impactful in Govardhan:
Manasi Ganga
A natural kund (sacred tank) at the heart of Govardhan town. The legend says it emerged from Lord Krishna’s mind during his time in Braj. Pilgrims take a ritual dip here before beginning the parikrama. The ghat is clean and maintained. Entry: free. Best time: 6–8 AM or 5–7 PM. Avoid the 12–2 PM summer midday when the stone ghat becomes intensely hot.
Mukharvind Temple (Mukut Mukharvind)
The principal darshan point of Giriraj the ‘face’ of the hill deity. A natural rock formation here is considered the face of Lord Govardhan and is worshipped with elaborate daily rituals. The temple directly adjacent is small but always active. This is the most devotionally significant stop on the parikrama and should not be rushed. Timings: 5:30 AM–12:00 PM and 4:30–9:00 PM.
Radha Kund and Shyam Kund
Located 2 km off the main parikrama route (toward Aring village). Two adjacent rectangular kunds of approximately 50×50 metres each. Radha Kund is considered the most sacred bathing spot in all of Braj more so, according to the Bhagavata Purana, than even the Yamuna at Vrindavan. The best time to visit is October during Bahula Ashtami when pilgrims bathe at midnight. On other days, the site is quiet and deeply atmospheric.
Kusum Sarovar
A beautifully preserved stepped tank (sarovar) with octagonal stone pavilions at each corner. Built in the 18th century by Raja Suraj Mal of Bharatpur as a memorial to Maharaja Jawahar Singh. One of the finest examples of Rajput architecture in the Braj region. The tank is spring-fed and remains clean year-round. Good for an hour’s quiet visit. Open all day.
Dan Ghati Temple
Marks the spot where young Krishna would playfully collect ‘tax’ (dan) from the gopis carrying milk and curd from Nandgaon to Mathura. A small but active temple with continuous kirtan. On the western section of the parikrama. Timings: 6 AM–12 PM and 4–8 PM.
To visit all of these with a knowledgeable guide who can provide the correct sequence and context, see our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour with Govardhan add-on our dedicated 5 Days Braj Yatra Package. Call +91-7302265809 to plan.
Ground Truth: What Nobody Tells You Before Visiting Govardhan
I have walked the Govardhan Parikrama with pilgrims in October heat, in February cold in monsoon rain. Here is what the travel guides and tourism boards do not say:
- The parikrama road has no shade for roughly 12 of the 21 km. Between 10 AM and 4 PM from April to September, the temperature on the open parikrama path reaches 40–44°C. Completing the walk during this window is physically dangerous. Start at 5 AM in summer to finish the main sections before 10 AM. In winter (November–February), the window is much more forgiving. 7 AM starts are fine.
- Ekadashi (the 11th day of each lunar fortnight) brings a significantly larger crowd, sometimes 20,000–30,000 pilgrims in a single day. The parikrama road becomes very congested near Mukharvind and Manasi Ganga. If you want a quieter experience of the parikrama, any day other than Ekadashi, full moon (Purnima) major festivals is preferable.
- Govardhan town has very limited ATM infrastructure. The two ATMs near the bus stand are frequently out of cash on Ekadashi and festival days. Carry cash from Mathura before arriving. All the mandirs, food stalls, auto-rickshaws in Govardhan are cash-only.
- Radha Kund and Shyam Kund require a 2 km detour off the parikrama route. Many pilgrims skip them because it adds 45 minutes. Radha Kund is one of the most genuinely sacred and least commercialised sites in all of Braj. Plan the detour.
- The Govardhan to Vrindavan road (Route 1) has active railway level crossings that can stop traffic for 10–15 minutes. The crossing near Govardhan side of the route is the most frequent. If your Vrindavan evening darshan is time-sensitive for example, you need to reach Banke Bihari before 6 PM and leave Govardhan by 3:30 PM at the latest.
How to Plan a Govardhan + Vrindavan Combined Trip
The most efficient way to combine both destinations depends on how many days you have and whether you are doing the Govardhan Parikrama on foot. Here are two practical frameworks:
Option A: Two-Day Plan (Recommended)
| Day | Morning (6 AM–12 PM) | Afternoon (12–4:30 PM) | Evening (4:30–9 PM) |
| Day 1 | Mathura: Vishram Ghat sunrise aarti, Janmabhoomi darshan, Dwarkadhish Temple | Travel to Vrindavan (11 km). Check into the hotel. Rest. | Banke Bihari evening darshan (opens 5:30 PM), Prem Mandir light show (7:30 PM) |
| Day 2 | Govardhan: Arrive at 6:30 AM. Manasi Ganga dip. Begin parikrama on foot or by auto (21 km, 4–6 hrs with stops) | Radha Kund visited. Lunch in Govardhan. Rest. | Drive to Vrindavan (45 min). ISKCON evening aarti at 6:30 PM. Return. |
Option B: Same-Day Plan (Govardhan Only)
If you are coming specifically for Govardhan Parikrama from Vrindavan or Mathura: leave Vrindavan by 5:30 AM, reach Govardhan by 6:15 AM, start parikrama immediately. Finish by 12–1 PM. Visit Radha Kund. Have lunch in Govardhan. Return to Vrindavan by 3 PM for an afternoon rest and 4:30 PM darshan starts at the Vrindavan temples. Experience My India runs this exact format as an add-on to our 2 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour.
Season recommendation: October to March is the ideal window for the Govardhan Parikrama. November (Kartik month) and the weeks around Govardhan Puja (day after Diwali) bring the highest footfall but also the most vibrant atmosphere. April to June: start before 6 AM or avoid the walk entirely; do the circuit by auto-rickshaw instead.

Experience My India guides manage parikrama timing for every group.
Is Govardhan Parikrama allowed by car?
Vehicles are permitted on the outer circuit road of the Govardhan Parikrama. You cannot drive immediately alongside the hill at all points; some sections are pedestrian-only near the rock. Most senior pilgrims and families use an auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw on the outer road, stopping at each major mandir to approach the hill on foot. Experience My India arranges this for all mobility-limited pilgrims.
What is the cost of Govardhan Parikrama?
The Govardhan Parikrama itself is free and there is no entry fee. If you hire a private auto-rickshaw for the full circuit, expect to pay ₹400–₹600.
