QUICK ANSWER – Van in Braj

Braj contains 12 sacred forests (Van) that trace every childhood and youth pastime of Lord Krishna. The seven Krishna-associated forests are Vrindavan, Madhuvana, Talavana, Kumudavana, Bahulavana, Kamyavana and Khadiravana. The five Balarama-linked forests are Bhadravana, Bhandiravana, Bilvavana, Lohavana and Mahavana (Gokul). Together they form the Braj Chaurasi Kos Van Yatra – a 252 km sacred circuit. Experience My India has guided 50,000+ pilgrims through these forests since 2018. Tours start from ₹1,999. Call +91-7302265809.

Why the Forests of Braj Matter More Than Most Pilgrims Realise

Most visitors who come to Mathura and Vrindavan spend their entire trip inside temple halls and miss the very landscape that gave birth to those temples. The 12 sacred Van of Braj – ancient forests stretching across 252 km of the Yamuna basin – are where Krishna actually lived, played, herded cows and performed the pastimes that became scripture. The temples came later. The forests came first.

I am Gurudutt, born and raised in Braj Bhoomi and the founder of Experience My India. Since 2018, I have personally guided more than 50,000 pilgrims through these forests – through Nidhivan on quiet November mornings, through Kamyavan in the weeks before Holi when the peacocks call before dawn, through Mahavana where you can still see the sand where the infant Krishna played. Every route in this guide comes from that experience.

By the end of this post you will know the name, location, mythological significance and ground-level visiting reality of every Van in Braj. You will also find direct links to Experience My India’s Braj yatra packages so you have a practical starting point. Let us begin where all of Braj begins – at the forest itself.

The 12 Sacred Van in Braj – Complete Overview

The Braj scriptures, especially the Bhakti Ratnakara and the Vraja-Bhakti-Vilasa, enumerate 12 principal forests that together constitute the sacred geography of Braj. They are not evenly distributed – seven are closely associated with Krishna’s childhood and youth pastimes, while five are more connected with his elder brother Balarama and the pastoral cow-herding traditions of ancient Vraja.

The table below gives you the full list at a glance before we go deeper into each one.

The Seven Forests Associated with Krishna’s Pastimes

These seven forests form the inner circle of Braj pilgrimage. Every major event of Krishna’s life – from Dhruva’s penance in Madhuvana to the defeating of Dhenukasura in Talavana to the divine Rasa Lila in Vrindavan itself – is located within these forests. Vaishnav pilgrims regard a visit to these seven as spiritually essential.

  • Vrindavan – The Heart of All Braj.Vrindavan is the most celebrated of all 12 forests and the one that gives its name to the entire tradition. This is where Krishna, Radha and the gopis performed the Rasa Lila, where the Yamuna curves closest to the forest groves and where more than 5,000 temples now stand on land that was once dense with kadamba and tamala trees. Every sacred grove within Vrindavan – Nidhivan, Seva Kunj, Imli Tala – is a fragment of the original forest.

  • Madhuvana – The Honey Forest. Madhuvana, located approximately 22 km from Vrindavan near modern-day Mathura, is where the child devotee Dhruva performed intense penance and received a direct vision of Vishnu. The name means ‘honey forest’ – the area was once dense with honey-producing flowers and the humming of bees described in Vaishnav poetry. Today a simple temple marks the site of Dhruva’s penance and a small kund (sacred pond) remains.
  • Talavana – Forest of the Palm Trees. Talavana is where the demon Dhenukasura, disguised as a donkey, was defeated by Krishna and Balarama. The forest was once protected by Dhenukasura and his followers, who prevented cowherd boys from eating its ripe palm fruits. Today, Talavana is associated with Balarama’s strength and Krishna’s childhood heroism. The site is roughly 18 km from Vrindavan, near the Govardhan circuit.
  • Kumudavana – The Smallest Forest. Kumudavana is the smallest of all 12 Van in Braj, but devotees consider it among the most visually beautiful. Named for the kumuda (white water lily), this forest was famous in antiquity for its lotus-filled ponds and wide grazing grounds where Krishna brought the cows. Small temples and a peaceful kund mark the site today. It lies roughly 20 km from Vrindavan and is best visited in October-November when the lily ponds are in bloom.
  • Bahulavana – Forest of the Jealous Cow. The story connected with Bahulavana is one of the most emotionally resonant in all of Braj lore. A cow named Bahula was caught by a tiger and pleaded for time to feed her calf before being eaten. The tiger agreed. Bahula returned with her calf and Krishna – moved by this exchange – intervened. The forest, located near Kosi (approximately 30 km from Vrindavan), contains the Bahula Kund and a temple to the cow. Pilgrims leave offerings for cows here.
  • Kamyavana – The Most Beautiful Van. Kamyavana is widely regarded by Vaishnav saints as the most spiritually charged and visually beautiful of all 12 forests. It is the site of the Vrinda Devi temple – Vrinda Devi being the goddess who governs Braj’s forests and arranges the meetings between Radha and Krishna. Kamyavana also contains 24 ghats, several ancient ponds including Narayana Kund and Kamya Kund and a Govardhan shila (sacred stone). It lies approximately 40 km from Vrindavan in the town of Kamyavan. Budget 3 hours minimum.

Covered in: 3-Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour

  • Khadiravana – Forest of the Kadamba Trees. Khadiravana is named for its khirni and kadamba trees and is the site where the demon Bakasura was defeated by Krishna and Balarama. The forest is famous in Braj tradition for its dense groves of kadamba – the tree under which Krishna played his flute. A large kund and several smaller shrines mark the sacred spots within the forest. It lies roughly 25 km from Vrindavan.

The Five Forests of Balarama and the Pastoral Tradition

These five forests are more closely tied to Balarama, Krishna’s elder brother and to the pastoral traditions of ancient Vraja – cow herding, forest play and the earthier rhythms of cowherd life. They are less visited than the Krishna-associated forests but deeply meaningful to serious pilgrims undertaking the full Braj Chaurasi Kos circuit.

  • Bhadravana – The Tranquil Forest. Bhadravana is a quiet, auspicious forest where Krishna and his cowherd friends would play during their grazing days. The atmosphere here is distinctly calmer than the busier pilgrimage sites and Vaishnav saints describe it as a place for interior contemplation rather than elaborate ritual. Located roughly 35 km from Vrindavan.
  • Bhandiravana – The Ancient Banyan. Bhandiravana is famous for two things: the defeat of the demon Pralamba by Balarama and the ancient Bhandir Vat – a banyan tree said to be thousands of years old that still stands at the site. Under this banyan, Radha and Krishna are believed to have been formally wed in a divine ceremony officiated by Brahma. The tree is a significant pilgrimage stop on the Chaurasi Kos yatra, located approximately 28 km from Vrindavan.
  • Bilvavana (Baelvan) – Forest of Wood-Apple Trees. Bilvavana is famous across all Braj traditions for the penance of Goddess Lakshmi. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Lakshmi performed severe austerities in this forest of bilva (wood-apple) trees in the hope of joining Krishna’s Rasa Lila – but was not permitted to enter. The forest thus carries a poignant spiritual meaning: even the goddess of wealth could not enter the Rasa Lila without the specific grace of Braj. Located roughly 15 km from Mathura.
  • Lohavana – Forest of the Gopis and Calves. Lohavana is associated with Krishna’s pastimes with the gopis and their cowherd calves – simple, joyful forest play rather than dramatic events. It is one of the less-documented forests in popular pilgrimage literature but is included in every serious Braj Chaurasi Kos yatra. Located roughly 12 km from Vrindavan.
  • Mahavana (Gokul) – The Largest Forest of All. Mahavana – also known simply as Gokul – is the largest of all 12 forests and the most historically significant in terms of Krishna’s earliest childhood. This is where Nanda Maharaja and Mother Yashoda raised the infant Krishna after he was secretly brought from Mathura prison. The sand of Gokul is considered sacred because the infant Krishna played on it. Key sites include Nanda Bhavan, Yashoda Kund and the spot where the demoness Putana was defeated. Gokul is roughly 15 km from Mathura.

Nidhivan – The Most Mysterious Van in Vrindavan

Of all the surviving forest fragments within Vrindavan town itself, Nidhivan is the one that most consistently affects first-time visitors. The grove contains over 16,000 trees whose trunks are distinctively twisted – no two grow straight. Vaishnav tradition holds that each tree is a gopi who participates in Krishna’s Rasa Lila every night after sunset.

What the guidebooks rarely mention: the forest is administered by temple priests who close it strictly before sunset. Entry after dusk is not permitted under any circumstances. Visitors who arrive after 5:30 PM in summer or after 5:00 PM in winter will find the gates closed. Plan your Nidhivan visit for the morning slot – ideally before 11:00 AM when the forest is cooler and less crowded.

Nidhivan is included in Experience My India’s Same Day Vrindavan Tour and all multi-day packages. Call +91-7302265809 to confirm the current day’s opening hours before you visit.

Kamyavana – The Most Beautiful of All Twelve

Kamyavan deserves its own section because most pilgrims who visit Mathura and Vrindavan never reach it – it is 40 km away and requires a dedicated half-day or full-day excursion. That is a mistake. Vaishnav saints from Rupa Goswami to Narayan Bhatt have written about Kamyavan as the forest that most powerfully retains the atmosphere of Braj’s original landscape.

The Vrinda Devi temple here is one of the oldest in all of Braj. Vrinda Devi – the goddess who governs Braj’s forest landscape – is central to the Rasa Lila tradition: every meeting between Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan was arranged by her. Visiting her temple in Kamyavan is, in a real sense, visiting the root of the entire Braj pilgrimage tradition.

Allow at least 3 hours. The 24 ghats require walking on uneven ground. Wear flat, comfortable footwear. Water is available at the main temple but not reliably at the outer kunds. Experience My India includes Kamyavan in our 3-day and longer Braj packages – call +91-7302265809 if you want to add it to a custom itinerary.

Braj Chaurasi Kos Van Yatra – The 252 km Forest Circuit

The Braj Chaurasi Kos Yatra is one of the most significant pilgrimage circuits in all of Vaishnav tradition. ‘Chaurasi Kos’ means 84 kos – approximately 252 km – which traces the outer boundary of sacred Braj, connecting all 12 forests, 12 major towns and more than 150 temples and sacred sites.

Traditionally, the yatra is done on foot over 30-40 days, though modern pilgrims usually complete it by vehicle in 5-7 days. Experience My India runs a dedicated 5-Day and 7-Day Braj 84 Kos Yatra package that covers the circuit in a structured way, with a Braj-born guide who knows the significance of every stop.

Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You About Visiting the Braj Forests

After guiding 10,000+ pilgrims through these forests since 2018, here are the realities that most online guides skip entirely:

  • Most of the 12 Van are not in Vrindavan town – they require road travel. Kamyavan is 40 km away. Bahulavana is 30 km. Bhandiravana is 28 km. Pilgrims who plan only a 1-day Mathura-Vrindavan trip will reach at most 2-3 forests. For the full 12, budget a minimum of 3 days.
  • Nidhivan closes before sunset – no exceptions. The closing time is enforced strictly by temple administration. In summer, gates close by 6:00 PM. In winter, by 5:00 PM. Arrive before 11:00 AM for a peaceful, crowd-free visit.
  • The ancient trees in most forests are no longer contiguous – they are fragments. Urbanisation has reduced most of the original 12 forests to temple compounds and small groves. Kamyavan and Bhandiravana retain the most original forest atmosphere. Do not expect a dense jungle at every site.
  • The roads to outer Van can be rough. Routes to Kamyavan, Bahulavana and Bhadiravana pass through village roads that are poorly maintained between July and September due to the monsoon. Experience My India uses vehicles suitable for these roads – call +91-7302265809 to discuss transport.
  • The best month for forest visits is October-November (Kartik Maas). During Kartik, the forests are at their greenest, the weather is cool (18-26°C) and thousands of pilgrims walk the Chaurasi Kos circuit on foot. The devotional atmosphere is impossible to replicate in any other month.

Plan Your Braj Forest Pilgrimage with Experience My India

The Van in Braj are not background scenery for a temple tour – they are the original sacred landscape, the reason the temples exist where they do. A pilgrimage that includes even three or four of these forests alongside the famous temples of Mathura and Vrindavan is a qualitatively different experience from a standard sightseeing trip.

Experience My India has structured Braj yatra packages specifically around this understanding. Our guides are Braj-born. Our routes are built around darshan flow and forest timings, not tourist convenience hours.
