The story: why Krishna’s family came to Nandgaon
Krishna was born in Mathura and carried as a newborn to Gokul, but Gokul did not stay safe for long. One after another, the demons sent by Kansa came for the child: Putana with her poisoned milk, Trinavarta the whirlwind, Shakatasura the cart. After so many attacks, Nanda Baba decided the cowherd community must move somewhere higher and safer. They travelled through Chhatikara and Kamyavan and finally settled here, where Nanda built his palace on a hill.
That hill is Nandishwar, and its story is lovely in its own right. Braj tradition says the hill is a form of Shiva himself, who longed to be near Krishna and was granted the boon of becoming the very ground on which Krishna’s home would stand. So at Nandgaon, Shiva literally holds up the house of Krishna. The boy lived here from about the age of six to ten, the golden years of the cowherd pastimes, before the story moved on to Mathura and beyond. For the earlier chapter in Gokul, see our guide to Gokul and Chintaharan Mahadev.
Nand Bhavan: the palace temple
The main temple of Nandgaon is Nand Bhavan, the house of Nanda, standing on the site of the old palace on top of Nandishwar hill. The present three-domed structure was built in the 19th century by King Rupa Singh, and its ceilings are painted with the pastimes of Krishna’s childhood.
What makes the altar here so moving is who stands on it. Alongside Krishna and Balarama are their parents, Nanda and Yashoda, with Radha, Rohini, Shridama and Madhumangal also honoured. It is one of the rare temples where Krishna’s foster parents are worshipped beside him, exactly as a family. Tradition says these very deities were hidden in a cave on the hill through troubled times until the great saint Sanatana Goswami rediscovered them about 500 years ago, and that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to see them here.
| Feature | Detail |
| Built by | King Rupa Singh, 19th century |
| Structure | Three domes, painted ceilings of Krishna’s pastimes |
| Main deities | Krishna and Balarama with Nanda and Yashoda |
| Also worshipped | Radha, Rohini, Shridama, Madhumangal |
| Rediscovered by | Sanatana Goswami, about 500 years ago |
Takeaway: come to Nand Bhavan to see Krishna as a son in his family home, not only as the Lord. It is the most humane darshan in Braj.
Pavan Sarovar and other sites
Below the hill lies Pavan Sarovar, on the road towards Kamavan, held to be the most sacred lake in Nandgaon, where pilgrims take a purifying dip. Around the town are other loved shrines, including the Nandishwar Mahadev temple in the temple courtyard, a Narasimha temple at the base of the hill, and Charan Pahari, a hill on the south-west side marked with what tradition holds to be Krishna’s footprints. A quiet half-day lets you see them without rushing.
Nandgaon and Barsana: the two towns of the story
You cannot really understand one town without the other. Barsana is Radha’s town, Nandgaon is Krishna’s, and the whole love story of Braj plays out between them. Pilgrims almost always see the two together, and it is the right way to do it.
| Nandgaon | Barsana | |
| Whose town | Krishna (Nanda Baba’s home) | Radha (Vrishabhanu’s home) |
| Main temple | Nand Bhavan | Radha Rani / Shriji temple |
| On the hill | Nandishwar | Bhanugarh |

Lathmar Holi: shared with Barsana
Nandgaon and Barsana together stage the most famous Holi in India, the Lathmar Holi, spread over several days. The men of Nandgaon go to Barsana, where the women greet them with playful blows of sticks (lath) while the men guard themselves with shields, and the next day the men of Barsana come to Nandgaon in return. It is a joyful re-enactment of the teasing between Krishna’s Nandgaon and Radha’s Barsana, and it draws enormous crowds in February or March, a few days before the main Holi. It is unforgettable but needs real planning, so arrange it well ahead with us.
Location and how to reach

Best time to visit
October to March is the comfortable season across Braj. Janmashtami, Krishna’s birthday, is the great day in Nandgaon, his own town, and Lathmar Holi in February or March is the other famous draw. Both are glorious but extremely crowded. For a calm darshan at Nand Bhavan and a quiet dip at Pavan Sarovar, come on an ordinary weekday morning outside the festivals.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. Nandgaon is a real working pilgrim town, not a polished tourist site. The temple sits atop Nandishwar hill, so there is a climb, gentler than Barsana’s but still a climb, so go early and carry water. The lanes are narrow and can be crowded, and the monkeys here are bold, so keep your prasad and spectacles secured.
As at the other Braj temples, you may meet helpers near the shrine pressing for a paid “special darshan” or a large donation. None of it is required. Darshan of Nanda, Yashoda and their Krishna is free. Give what your heart wishes at the temple, and no more.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, the town where Krishna’s story began before it moved to Nandgaon, so this chapter is close to home for me. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We plan the climb for a cool hour, tell the story of Nanda Baba’s move from Gokul on the ground where it ended, pair Nandgaon with Barsana the right way, and keep the elders comfortable. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: do Nandgaon and Barsana together in one unhurried day, one town in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a quiet pause at Pavan Sarovar. Seeing Krishna’s town and Radha’s town on the same day is how the love story of Braj truly lands.
