Lucknow to Vrindavan: Distance, Route and the Best Way to Travel

Special 20% Off on Mathura Vrindavan tour packages

Quick answer- Lucknow to Vrindavan is about 360 to 400 km by road, roughly 6 to 8 hours, best driven via the Agra Lucknow Expressway to Agra and then the short hop to Braj through Mathura. By train, several services run from Lucknow to Mathura Junction in about 5 to 7 hours, then it is 12 km by road to Vrindavan. There is no direct train to Vrindavan and no airport at Mathura or Vrindavan. A private taxi costs about ₹5,500 to ₹8,000 one way. Because the route runs through Agra, many travellers add the Taj Mahal. Experience My India has guided 50,000 plus pilgrims since 2018, rated 4.5 stars. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Introduction

Lucknow to Vrindavan is a journey between two very different souls of Uttar Pradesh. You leave the nawabi grace of Lucknow, its imambaras and kebabs and old-world courtesy, and a few hours later you arrive in the land of Krishna, where the day runs on temple bells and the Yamuna.

Thanks to the Agra Lucknow Expressway, it is now a far smoother drive than it once was, and it comes with a bonus, because the road runs straight toward Agra and the Taj Mahal.

I am Gurudutt. I was born in Braj Bhoomi and I have arranged this journey for pilgrims coming from Lucknow and across Awadh since 2018. This guide gives you the real distance, the best route, every way to travel it, and how to fold the Taj Mahal into your Braj pilgrimage. For everything to see once you arrive, our places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan guide covers both towns.

Lucknow to Vrindavan Distance at a Glance

Route Distance Travel time
Lucknow to Vrindavan by road, via Agra Lucknow Expressway About 360 to 400 km 6 to 8 hours
Lucknow to Mathura by road About 397 km 6 to 7 hours
Mathura to Vrindavan About 12 km 30 to 40 minutes
Lucknow to Mathura by train About 5 to 7 hours Then 12 km by road
By air No direct flights Not practical

You will see distances from about 360 km to 400 km quoted, the difference being where you measure to and which road you take. Call it about 380 km to Vrindavan and allow six to eight hours by road, and you will plan correctly.

The Road Route via the Agra Lucknow Expressway

The single best thing to understand about this journey is the road that transformed it: the Agra Lucknow Expressway.

This modern, access-controlled expressway runs about 330 km from Lucknow to Agra, with well-maintained lanes, rest stops and food courts, and it turns what used to be a slow slog through towns into a smooth four to five hour run. From Agra, it is a short hop of about 70 km north to Braj, reaching Mathura first and then Vrindavan.

So the route in plain terms is: take the Agra Lucknow Expressway from Lucknow to the Agra area, then continue north to Mathura and on the final 12 km to Vrindavan. As with every approach to Braj, you reach Mathura first, because Vrindavan sits just beyond it, which means you can take darshan at Krishna Janmabhoomi on the way, covered in our Krishna Janmabhoomi guide.

A driver who knows the expressway and where to break the journey makes a real difference on a trip this length, which is what our Vrindavan Mathura tour by car provides.

Lucknow to Vrindavan
Lucknow to Vrindavan

By Train via Mathura Junction

There is no fast direct train to Vrindavan, so the route is Lucknow to Mathura Junction, then 12 km on to Vrindavan by road.

  Detail
Journey time About 5 to 7 hours to Mathura Junction
Departs Lucknow stations, including Lucknow Junction and Charbagh
Arrives Mathura Junction
From Mathura Junction to Vrindavan 12 km, 30 to 40 minutes by road

Several trains run the Lucknow to Mathura route daily, many via Agra Cantt, with the faster services reaching Mathura Junction in around five hours. Trains are comfortable and often cheaper than a taxi for solo travellers or couples.

The catch is the familiar last leg, the 12 km from Mathura Junction into Vrindavan, where you step off into the crowd of auto drivers quoting tourist rates. Experience My India arranges station pickup so a car is waiting when your train arrives. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 with your train details. The last leg is covered in our Mathura to Vrindavan distance guide.

By Taxi, the Most Comfortable Way

For families, groups, or anyone who values a direct door to door journey, a private taxi is the best choice on this longer route.

  Detail
Distance About 380 km via the expressway
Travel time 6 to 8 hours
Sedan, one way About ₹5,500 to ₹6,500
SUV or Innova, one way About ₹7,000 to ₹8,000
Best for Families, groups, Taj plus Braj trips

A taxi lets you leave Lucknow at your own hour, stop for meals at the expressway food courts, break the journey at Agra for the Taj if you wish, and reach Vrindavan without any transfer hassle. Fares are quoted per vehicle, so for a family it is reasonable, and they rise during festivals and peak season.

For a journey of this length, especially with elderly travellers, the comfort of a private car with an experienced driver is worth a great deal. Experience My India arranges this as part of its Lucknow pickups.

By Bus from Lucknow

The budget option. Buses run from Lucknow toward Mathura, operated by UP state transport and private operators such as Samay Shatabdi.

  Detail
Travel time About 7 to 9 hours
Route Lucknow to Mathura, then shared vehicles to Vrindavan
Operators State transport and private operators
Fare Budget friendly, varies by operator and AC

Buses are cheap and available, but slower and less comfortable than a taxi or train, and they leave you to sort out the final stretch from Mathura to Vrindavan yourself. For solo travellers on a budget they work. For families, the taxi or the train is worth the difference.

Why There Are No Direct Flights

People sometimes search for a Lucknow to Vrindavan flight, so let me save you the trouble. There are no direct flights, because Mathura and Vrindavan have no airport.

The nearest airports are Agra, about 70 km from Vrindavan, and Delhi, about 160 to 180 km. Flying from Lucknow would mean a flight to Delhi and then a three to four hour drive, which for this route usually takes longer and costs more than the direct drive or the train. For Lucknow to Braj, road or rail is the sensible choice.

Adding the Taj Mahal on the Way

Here is the bonus that makes this route special. Because the Agra Lucknow Expressway runs straight to Agra, and Agra is only about 70 km from Braj, you can fold the Taj Mahal into your Vrindavan trip with almost no detour.

A beautiful plan is Lucknow to Agra on the expressway, the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then the short hop to Mathura and Vrindavan for darshan. You see one of the wonders of the world and the land of Krishna in a single journey, which is why so many Lucknow travellers choose this combination.

One honest note: darshan at every temple in Mathura and Vrindavan is free, but the Taj Mahal ticket is bought separately from the government, on the day, and is never part of a Braj package. The full Agra to Braj hop is in our Agra to Vrindavan guide, and our Same Day Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour is built for exactly this.

How to Plan the Trip

For a six to eight hour journey, a little planning makes the difference between a smooth day and a tiring one.

  • Leave Lucknow early. A morning departure means you reach Braj by afternoon, rest, and are ready for the evening darshan. Leaving late means arriving tired with the best hours gone.
  • Base yourself in Braj for at least a night. At about 380 km, Vrindavan is too far for a comfortable same day return from Lucknow, so stay at least one night. For where to stay, our where to stay in Mathura and Vrindavan guide covers the areas.
  • Decide on the Taj early. If you want to add Agra, plan it into the outbound journey, since the expressway passes right by.
  • Give Braj two days if you can. Having driven six to eight hours, a single rushed day does not do it justice.

Best Time to Travel

Season Conditions
October to March Best. Pleasant for the drive and for Braj
April to June Very hot. Travel early or overnight
July to September Monsoon, cooler, watch for slower roads
December and January Watch for fog on the expressway, which slows the road badly before dawn

The distance never changes, but comfort does. Winter is ideal, though December and January fog on the expressway can add time and is genuinely dangerous before dawn, so if you travel then, prefer the train or a later start. Our best time to visit guide covers the Braj calendar.

Ground Truth, What Nobody Tells You

  • The Agra Lucknow Expressway is the whole story. It turned this into a fast, smooth drive. Take it, not the old town roads.
  • You always go via Mathura. There is no separate direct road to Vrindavan. You reach Mathura first, so you can take darshan there on the way.
  • The Taj is on the route. The expressway runs to Agra, so adding the Taj Mahal costs almost no extra travel. Do not miss the chance.
  • There are no direct flights, and flying is slower. No airport at Braj. Flying via Delhi takes longer than the direct drive or train.
  • Do not day trip from Lucknow. At 380 km, stay at least a night in Braj rather than attempting a return in one exhausting day.
  • December and January fog is real. It slows the expressway badly before dawn. Take the train or start later in deep winter.

Fares rise during festivals and peak season. Experience My India includes a private car with an experienced driver in its Lucknow pickups. Call +91-7302265809.

Which route is best from Lucknow to Vrindavan?

The Agra Lucknow Expressway is the best route, a modern access-controlled expressway running about 330 km from Lucknow to Agra with well-maintained lanes, rest stops and food courts, completing in about 4 to 5 hours. From Agra it is a short 70 km hop north to Braj via Mathura. This is far faster and smoother than the old town roads. Experience My India’s drivers take the expressway. Call +91-7302265809.

Can I visit the Taj Mahal on the way from Lucknow to Vrindavan?

Yes, and it is an excellent plan. The Agra Lucknow Expressway runs straight to Agra, only about 70 km from Braj, so you can see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then continue to Mathura and Vrindavan with almost no detour. Note the Taj ticket is bought separately from the government on the day and is never part of a Braj package. Experience My India’s Same Day Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour is built for this. For this route, road or rail is better. Experience My India can arrange either.

Can I do a Lucknow to Vrindavan day trip?

It is not ideal. At about 380 km each way, a same day return from Lucknow means 12 to 16 hours of travel for only a few hours in Braj, which is exhausting and does not do the temples justice. Far better to stay at least one night in Mathura or Vrindavan. Experience My India recommends a two or three day trip so you can see Braj properly, and can add the Taj on the way. Call +91-7302265809.

How long does it take to drive from Lucknow to Vrindavan?

About 6 to 8 hours for the roughly 380 km, via the Agra Lucknow Expressway to Agra and then north to Braj through Mathura. The expressway is fast, but allow extra time for the final 12 km into Vrindavan, where the temple lanes are narrow and slow. In December and January, watch for fog on the expressway, which slows the road badly before dawn. Experience My India plans departures for good arrival timing. Call +91-7302265809.

When is the best time to travel from Lucknow to Vrindavan?

October to March is best, with pleasant weather for both the drive and Braj. April to June is very hot, so travel early or overnight. Watch out for December and January fog on the expressway, which can add time and is dangerous before dawn, when the train is the safer choice. Leave Lucknow early to reach Braj in good time for the evening darshan. Experience My India adapts to your season. Call +91-7302265809.

Conclusion

Lucknow to Vrindavan is about 380 km, and the Agra Lucknow Expressway has turned it into a smooth six to eight hour drive with a wonder of the world sitting right on the way. From the nawabi grace of Awadh to the temple bells of Braj, with the Taj Mahal in between if you want it.

Leave early, take the expressway, reach Mathura first for darshan, and stay at least a night so Braj gets the time it deserves. Add Agra, and you have one of the richest short journeys in North India.
