If Barsana is Radha’s town, Nandgaon is Krishna’s. It is the boyhood home of Krishna, the village of his foster father Nanda, the Nand Baba for whom it is named, and his mother Yashoda. After leaving Gokul to protect the child Krishna from the demons sent by Kansa, Nanda brought his family here to the safety of Nandishwar Hill, and here Krishna grew up, herding cows and playing with his cowherd friends. The two hills, Radha’s Barsana and Krishna’s Nandgaon, face each other across the Braj countryside, about 8 to 10 km apart, as they have in the stories for five thousand years.

The heart of Nandgaon is the Nand Bhawan Temple, also called Nand Mahal, crowning Nandishwar Hill, built on the very spot where Nanda’s household is said to have stood. Unusually, it enshrines the whole Nanda family together: Nanda and Yashoda, the foster parents, with Krishna and his elder brother Balarama. Here Krishna is worshipped not as a lord or a king but as the beloved son of a cowherd home, Yashoda’s boy.
The temple is a beautiful three-domed building, its ceilings painted with scenes of Krishna’s childhood pastimes.
