Ground Truth – What Nobody Tells You
Twelve kilometres does not mean twenty minutes. Mathura to Vrindavan is 11–12 km and it takes 30 to 40 minutes on an ordinary day. Inside old Vrindavan, a 2 km hop between temples can eat 40 minutes on a festival weekend. Lanes are under four metres wide in places and shared with cows, e-rickshaws and several thousand devotees.
Auto drivers quote tourists four times the local rate. Keshi Ghat to Banke Bihari is a ₹20–₹30 ride. On a Saturday, visitors get quoted ₹100–₹150. We use pre-arranged private cars for exactly this reason – there is nothing to negotiate at the door.
Monkeys take glasses, phones and food packets. This sounds funny until it is your father’s spectacles. Near Nidhivan and the Banke Bihari lanes, keep bags shut, keep food out of sight and keep sunglasses in your bag rather than on your head.
Krishna Janmabhoomi takes your phone. All electronics go into a security locker before entry and the queue for that locker builds badly between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM. Carry one small cloth bag and nothing else.
Photography inside Banke Bihari is prohibited. Not discouraged – prohibited and enforced. Devotees have been removed for trying. Put the phone away before you reach the gate.
