Quick answer

Maan Mandir sits on the peak of Maan Garh, one of Barsana’s four sacred hills, about 50 km from Mathura. It marks the famous Maan Leela: the day Radha fell into maan, a mood of loving pique, when Krishna came late to their meeting after being delayed with Chandravali. None of his apologies worked, so at last Krishna disguised himself as a sakhi and played the vina so sweetly that Radha, embracing her, recognised her beloved and her maan melted away. The hilltop temple, cared for by the Maan Mandir Seva Sansthan under Shri Ramesh Baba Ji Maharaj, worships Radha and Krishna as Shri Radha Maan Bihari. Open about 7 AM to 9 PM, entry free. To include it in your Barsana visit, call or WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Barsana rests on four hills and each one holds a pastime of Radha and Krishna. The one that tugs at the heart most is Maan Garh, the hill of maan, where Radha once turned her face away from Krishna in loving anger and made the Lord of all work to win her back. The temple on its peak, Maan Mandir, is both that story and one of the finest views in all of Braj. Here, from a guide born in Braj, is the verified story, the timings and how to reach it, with the key details in tables. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour package, which can include Barsana.

The story: what “maan” really means

To understand Maan Mandir you must first understand maan, because a visitor who thinks it means a simple quarrel misses the whole point. Maan is the loving pique of one who loves so completely that even a small neglect wounds deeply. It is not the opposite of love; it is one of its highest expressions.

The story is this. Krishna sent word, through Subala and Vrinda, that he wished to meet Radha and she waited for him at the appointed hour. On his way, Krishna met Padma, a friend of Chandravali, who begged him to look in on her. He went for just a moment, but became absorbed and missed his meeting with Radha. Radha’s trained parrots, her saris, carried the news to her and she fell into maan, turning her face away. When Krishna came at last with his apologies, nothing moved her.

How Krishna broke her maan

It was Vishakha, one of Radha’s sakhis, who found the way. On her advice, Krishna disguised himself as a sakhi, a girl and came as “Shyama Sakhi.” In that form he played the vina so exquisitely that Radha, enchanted, embraced the stranger and in that embrace recognised the touch of her own Shyamsundar. Her maan melted in an instant and the two were reconciled. That is the pastime the hill remembers and why the deities here are Shri Radha Maan Bihari, the Lord who is enjoyed even through Radha’s loving anger. For the peacock-dance pastime that also soothed her maan, see our guide to Mor Kutir, which stands opposite this hill.

Takeaway: come to know the story and the climb becomes a pilgrimage into the meaning of love, not just a walk up a hill.

The temple and its seva

The temple on the peak is cared for by the Maan Mandir Seva Sansthan, led by Shri Ramesh Baba Ji Maharaj, who is widely known across Braj for his work to protect its sacred hills, forests and the Yamuna. The deities of Shri Radha Maan Bihari are worshipped here with great devotion and the ashram keeps the kind of simple, serious bhakti atmosphere that rewards an unhurried visit. The temple also hosts the annual Radha Rani Braj Yatra, part of the great 84 Kos pilgrimage of Braj.

Location and how to reach

Maan Mandir sits on Maan Garh at the edge of Barsana, west of Sankari Khor, reached by road from Mathura and then a climb.

From Distance and mode
Barsana (Shriji temple) A short ride, then a climb to the peak
Sankari Khor Close by, to the east
Kosi Kalan About 18 km
Mathura Junction About 50 km, by taxi or cab
Govardhan About 20 km
Vrindavan About 45 km, by taxi
Delhi About 160 km, 3.5 to 4 hours via the Yamuna Expressway

Reaching the shrine means a climb to one of Barsana’s highest peaks, so wear comfortable footwear and allow time. There are facilities at the temple including drinking water, prasad, a shoe store and parking. Most pilgrims combine Maan Mandir with Barsana’s Radha Rani temple, Sankari Khor and Prem Sarovar. Our Gokul and Govardhan combo tour can extend to Barsana.

Best time to visit

Climb in the cool of the morning or come in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset, when the whole of Barsana spreads out below the peak in golden light. October to March is the comfortable season across Braj. Barsana fills to bursting during Radha Ashtami and the celebrated Lathmar Holi a few days before the main Holi; the hill is joyful then but very crowded and the climb is far harder in a crush. For a calm visit and clear views, choose an ordinary weekday.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Maan Mandir is on one of Barsana’s highest hills and reaching the top is a real climb. It is not suited to anyone who cannot manage steps and a slope and in the summer heat even the fit should go early. Take water, go slowly and there is no shame in resting on the way.

And please come for the right reason. Maan Mandir is a working ashram of serious devotion, not a viewpoint with a temple attached. The view is a gift, but the heart of the place is the Maan Leela and the bhakti kept alive here. Spend a quiet few minutes in the darshan before you turn to your camera and the hill gives you far more than a photograph.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and Maan Mandir is one of the places where I love to explain the real meaning of Radha’s maan before we climb. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We plan the climb for a cool hour, tell the Maan Leela on the hill where it is remembered, judge honestly whether the climb suits your group and build the rest of Barsana around it. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: pair Maan Mandir with Mor Kutir, which sits opposite it, so you hear both the stories that soothed Radha’s maan in one visit, the sakhi disguise and the peacock dance. Climb in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset over Barsana. It is one of the finest evenings in all of Braj.
