Quick answerGovind Kund is a sacred rectangular tank at the foot of Govardhan Hill, on the edge of Anyor (Aniyora) village, about 25 km from Mathura. This is where, after Krishna lifted Govardhan and humbled Indra’s pride, Indra came down with the celestial cow Surabhi and bathed Krishna in milk and during that abhishek Krishna was given the name Govinda, “the one who pleases the cows and the senses.” The kund was later established by Vajranabha, Krishna’s great-grandson. Pilgrims take darshan and a holy dip here on the Govardhan Parikrama. Entry is free. To include Govind Kund in your Govardhan visit, call or WhatsApp +91-7302265809. |

The story: how Krishna became Govinda
To understand Govind Kund, you have to know the whole Govardhan Leela. The people of Braj used to worship Indra, the king of the gods and the lord of rain, with a great annual offering. One year the boy Krishna persuaded them to stop and to honour Govardhan Hill instead, the hill that fed their cows and gave them everything. Indra, insulted, sent down seven days and nights of furious rain and thunderbolts to drown the village.
Krishna answered by lifting the entire Govardhan Hill on the little finger of his left hand and holding it up like an umbrella, sheltering every villager, cow and calf beneath it for seven days. When the rain finally stopped and Indra understood who this child really was, his pride broke.
The abhishek and the name “Govinda”
On Brahma’s counsel, Indra came down to beg forgiveness. He brought with him Surabhi, the celestial wish-fulfilling cow and together they performed the abhishek, the ritual bathing and coronation of Krishna, pouring streams of Surabhi’s milk over him. It was at this ceremony, right here at this kund, that Krishna was given the name Govinda: go meaning the cows and the senses, vinda meaning the one who pleases and protects them. The event is remembered as the Govinda Pattabhishek, the crowning of Govinda and the water where it happened became Govind Kund. For the story of the hill itself, read our history of Govardhan and why Krishna lifted it.
Why Vajranabha built it
Generations later, Krishna’s great-grandson Vajranabha travelled through Braj rediscovering and marking the places of the leelas, which had been lost over time. He established Govind Kund as it stands to commemorate the abhishek. An old verse from the Mathura-khanda says simply that “by bathing in Govind Kund, one is awarded liberation.”
Takeaway: Daan Ghati and Jatipura show you where the leela played out; Govind Kund is where it was sealed and where the name the whole world now chants was first spoken.

Best time to visit
Come in the morning, when the ghats are cool and quiet and the light on the water is lovely. October to March is the comfortable season across Braj. The most charged days are Govardhan Puja and Annakut (the day after Diwali) and the whole of Kartik month, when the Govardhan circuit fills with pilgrims; these are glorious but very crowded. A weekday morning outside festivals gives you the kund almost to yourself.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. Govind Kund is not a grand, manicured monument; it is a historic tank and like many of Braj’s old kunds its water is not always clean. Many pilgrims take only a symbolic touch of the water or a sprinkle on the head rather than a full dip and that is perfectly fine; the sankalp matters more than a swim. If you do want to bathe, use the ghat steps carefully; they can be slippery.
The deeper point is this: it is easy to walk the Govardhan Parikrama as a tick-list of stops and miss what Govind Kund actually is. Stand at the ghat for a minute and remember that this is where Indra bowed and Krishna became Govinda. That one memory will change how the rest of your parikrama feels.
