Quick answer

Raval (also spelled Rawal) is a village on the bank of the Yamuna, about 13 km from Mathura and just 5 to 7 km from my own Gokul, traditionally honoured as the birthplace of Radha Rani. The tradition says King Vrishabhanu found the infant Radha lying on a golden lotus floating in the Yamuna and that she did not open her eyes until she first saw baby Krishna. The temple here, the Ladli-lal (Radha Rani Janmasthan) temple, worships Radha in her infant form unlike Barsana, which worships her as a young girl. It was once one of Braj’s great pilgrimage sites and is now quiet and little-visited. Entry is free. To include Raval in your Braj visit, call or WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Everyone goes to Barsana for Radha Rani. Almost no one goes to Raval and yet Raval is where she was born. A few kilometres from my own Gokul, on a quiet bend of the Yamuna surrounded by farmland, stands the small white temple that marks the spot where, the scriptures say, Radha first appeared on earth. Here, from a guide born next door, is the verified story, the temple, the timings and how to reach it, with the key details in tables. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour package, which can include Gokul and Raval.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. The story: how Radha appeared at Raval

The story of Radha’s birth is unlike any other in Braj. According to the Padma Purana, King Vrishabhanu, the chieftain of this region, came to the Yamuna and found an infant girl lying upon a golden lotus floating on the water. He and his wife Kirti, who had longed for a child, took her home and raised her as their daughter. Lord Brahma himself is said to have appeared to Vrishabhanu and told him this was no ordinary child but a form of the goddess herself.

The tenderest part of the story is this: the baby Radha did not open her eyes and did not speak, from the day she was found. It was only when baby Krishna was brought before her the two families being close that she opened her eyes for the very first time, as if she had been waiting to see only him. That is the kind of love Braj remembers.

Why she is called Radhika

She was named Radhika because she was born the year after Krishna, under the Anuradha constellation. The name Radha is also linked to the word aradhyate “the one who constantly worships” for she is the supreme worshipper and lover of Krishna. For the wider story of Krishna’s own birth and childhood nearby, see our guide to Gokul and Mahavan.

The temple: Radha as an infant

The temple at Raval is small, white-marble and quiet, surrounded by farmland, a goshala and the Yamuna. What makes it special is the form in which Radha is worshipped here: as a baby, lovingly called Ladli (“the cherished one”) and Ladli-lal. There is a deity of the infant Radharani alongside the childhood forms of Radha and Krishna. Opposite the temple is a garden dedicated to Radharani, with an unusual pair of conjoined trees, one dark and one pale, that pilgrims see as Radha and Krishna together.

This is the key difference most visitors never learn: Raval is where Radha was born and is worshipped as an infant; Barsana is where she grew up and is worshipped as a young girl. They are two different places, two different forms, both true.

  Raval Barsana

Best time to visit

Radha Ashtami, in the month of Bhadra (August–September), is Raval’s great day, when the birthplace of Radha is celebrated with real joy. Come then if you can. Through the rest of the year, October to March is the comfortable season and because Raval is so quiet you can have a peaceful darshan on almost any morning. Early morning, with the Yamuna beside you, is the loveliest time.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born next door in Gokul. Raval is not set up for tourists. It is a small village temple surrounded by fields, the facilities are basic and on an ordinary day you may be nearly the only pilgrim there. Do not come expecting the scale or the energy of Barsana come expecting quiet and a chance to sit undisturbed at the place where, the scriptures say, Radha Rani first opened her eyes.

There is a gentle debate you may hear: some insist Barsana is “the” place of Radha, some insist Raval is. Both are right. Radha was born at Raval and raised at Barsana. You do not have to choose; if you have the time, see both and let Raval be the quiet, tender beginning of the story.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul, a few kilometres from Raval, so this is quite literally home ground for me. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We bring you here on the way to or from Gokul, tell the story of Radha’s appearance on the banks of the Yamuna where it happened and plan a route that does not leave out the birthplace of Radha Rani. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: pair Raval with Gokul and Mahavan in one calm morning. They are close, they are quiet and together they give you the childhood of both Radha and Krishna. Keep Barsana for a separate half-day, since it is 40-odd km away on the other side of Braj.

Why is Raval so little visited?

Before Barsana’s great Sriji temple was built, Raval was one of Braj’s most important pilgrimage sites and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu visited it. Experience My India makes sure it is not left out.
