I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Nandgaon is one of my favourite places to take those who want the real, quiet Braj, so let me show you what to see, when to go and how to fit it with Barsana.
What is Nandgaon and why visit?
Nandgaon takes its name from Nanda Baba, Krishna’s foster father, who by the tradition moved his family here from Gokul and Mahavan as Krishna grew, seeking safety from Kansa’s demons at the blessed Nandishvar Hill. It is where much of Krishna’s boyhood unfolded and the hill itself, Nandishvar, is revered as Shiva in the form of the hill, blessed to watch over the leelas. For Braj pilgrims, Nandgaon completes the story that Barsana begins: the two villages face each other across the fields like Krishna and Radha themselves. Its gift is peace, a village quiet that feels a world away from the temple lanes of Vrindavan.
Nand Bhavan and what to see
The heart of a visit is the hilltop Nand Bhavan, the palace-temple of Nanda Baba, reached by climbing the stone stairway up Nandishvar Hill. Inside, darshan is given to Nanda, Yashoda, the child Krishna and Balram, seated together not as a grand royal court but as a family, which is exactly its charm. From the top, the whole of Braj opens out around you, a view worth the climb on its own. Below the hill lie the sacred waters of the Pavan Sarovar and the quiet village lanes and a short way off is the Kokilavan Shani Dev temple, the Shani Dham near Nandgaon, a great draw on Saturdays. Other village temples include Yashoda Nandan, Nritya Gopal and Gopinath.

Nandgaon temple timings and entry
Nand Bhavan opens in the morning and again in the evening and entry is free.
| Session | Indicative timing |
| Morning | 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM |
| Evening | 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM |
Timings for Nand Bhavan vary by source and some list roughly 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 to 8:00 PM, so treat these as a guideline and confirm on the day, especially during Holi and Janmashtami when Nandgaon is busiest. Our Mathura temple timings guide keeps the wider list.
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon
Nandgaon is most famous for its Lathmar Holi, which it shares with the Radha Rani temple at Barsana. In the tradition, the men of Nandgaon travel to Barsana to play, where the women of Barsana drive them off with wooden laths and the next day the play moves to Nandgaon, where the roles reverse. It is one of the most spirited and internationally famous festivals in all of Braj. If you come for it, reach early and expect large crowds; if you come on an ordinary day, you get peace instead.
How to reach Nandgaon
Nandgaon sits in western Braj, best reached as part of a Barsana and Govardhan day.
- From Barsana: about 8 to 10 km, 20 to 30 minutes, the most common approach, since the two are visited together
- From Mathura: about 50 km, roughly 1.5 hours by road
- From Vrindavan: about 50 km
- Nearest station: Mathura Junction
The smoothest plan is to treat Nandgaon as part of a western Braj loop: give the morning to Govardhan or Barsana and pair Nandgaon with them for the rest of the day. Our Mathura to Vrindavan distance and route guide helps with the wider approach.
Best time to visit
October to March is the pleasant season and a weekday morning is calmest. Nandgaon comes alive and overflows, during Lathmar Holi, worth timing for the spectacle if crowds do not deter you. On any ordinary day, the village peace and the hilltop view are the draw, so come with time to climb the hill slowly and sit at the top.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. Nandgaon is not a place to rush and it is not built to impress; it simply lives. The climb to Nand Bhavan is a real stairway, so pace it, especially with elders and rest at the top for the view before you come down. Do not treat it as a quick add-on to Barsana; give it a quiet hour. And if you come for Lathmar Holi, understand that it is a crush of colour and crowds, wonderful but demanding, so plan the day and the safety carefully. Come on an ordinary morning and Nandgaon gives you the rarest thing in Braj: silence.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I take pilgrims through these western Braj villages every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We arrange Nandgaon as part of the western Braj loop with Barsana and Govardhan, so it makes sense rather than a long separate trip, help elders with the hill climb and tell the Nanda and Yashoda story on the ground. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: do Nandgaon and Barsana together as one western Braj day, since they are only 8 to 10 km apart and their stories are two halves of one whole. Climb Nand Bhavan in the cooler morning, sit at the top for the view over Braj, then cross to Barsana. On an ordinary day it is the quietest, most peaceful corner of the whole region.
