Delhi to Vrindavan: Distance, Route and the Best Way to Travel

Special Offer

Special 20% Off on Mathura Vrindavan tour packages

Quick answer- Delhi to Vrindavan is about 160 to 180 km, 3 to 4 hours by road via the Yamuna Expressway. The NH-44 route is shorter at about 150 km but slower through towns. By train, take the Shatabdi or Taj Express to Mathura Junction in under two hours, then 12 km on to Vrindavan. Leave Delhi before 7:00 AM for the smoothest drive. A private cab runs from ₹1,999. Experience My India has arranged this transfer for 50,000 plus pilgrims since 2018, rated 4.5 stars. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Introduction

The Delhi to Vrindavan trip is the most common journey we plan, and it is also the one people most often get slightly wrong.

They think the drive is the hard part. It is not. The Yamuna Expressway is smooth, wide and honestly a pleasure at dawn. The hard part is the last twelve kilometres inside Vrindavan itself, where the temple lanes are narrow, the crowds are thick, and a family that left Delhi at nine in the morning arrives at Banke Bihari right as it closes for the afternoon.

I am Gurudutt. I was born in Braj Bhoomi and I have arranged this exact transfer for pilgrims since 2018. This guide gives you the real distance, both routes, every mode of travel, and the one timing decision that matters more than all of them. See our Mathura Vrindavan Tour massage on WhatsApp +91-7302265809

Once you arrive, our places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan guide tells you what to see.

Delhi to Vrindavan Distance at a Glance

Route Distance Travel time
Via Yamuna Expressway About 160 to 180 km 3 to 4 hours
Via NH-44 About 150 km 3 to 3.5 hours, more traffic
Delhi to Mathura only About 145 to 160 km 2.5 to 3.5 hours
Delhi Airport to Vrindavan About 170 km 3.5 to 4 hours
By train to Mathura Junction 130 km rail Under 2 hours on Shatabdi

The reason you will see distances from 150 km to 182 km quoted online is the same reason as always. It depends on the route and where you measure it. The Yamuna Expressway is slightly longer but far smoother, so it is the one almost everyone takes.

The Two Routes, Yamuna Expressway vs NH-44

Yamuna Expressway, the one to take

About 160 to 180 km. This is the modern, six lane expressway that runs from Greater Noida down to Agra, and you exit it near Mathura. It is smooth, has clean rest stops with food courts and washrooms, FASTag toll booths, and even EV charging now.

The only slow part is the very start, getting through Noida to the expressway entry, which is why leaving early matters so much. Once you are on the expressway, it is an easy three hours.

NH-44, shorter but slower

About 150 km. The older national highway is shorter on paper but runs through town after town, with the traffic, level crossings and congestion that come with them. Some drivers prefer it for the roadside dhabas and the local feel, but for most families the expressway is the better choice.

Our drivers take the expressway by default and switch only if there is a specific reason, which is the kind of small judgment a Vrindavan Mathura tour by car handles for you.

Delhi to Vrindavan
Delhi to Vrindavan

By Car, the Most Popular Way

For a family or a group, a private car is the obvious choice, and here is why. You control the departure time, which as you will see below is the single most important factor. You can stop for tea at the expressway food court. And you are not dependent on local transport for the tricky last stretch inside Vrindavan.

  Detail
Distance 160 to 180 km via Yamuna Expressway
Travel time 3 to 4 hours
Private cab, one way From ₹1,999
Private cab, round trip same day From about ₹3,500
Toll FASTag, roughly ₹400 to ₹500 each way

A same day round trip from Delhi is entirely doable and very popular. Leave by 6:00 AM, reach Vrindavan by 9:30 AM for morning darshan, and you are back in Delhi by evening. This is exactly what our Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour from ₹1,999 is built for, with pickup from your Delhi home, hotel or the airport.

By Train via Mathura Junction

There is no fast direct train to Vrindavan itself, so the route everyone uses is Delhi to Mathura Junction, then 12 km on to Vrindavan by road.

Train From Time to Mathura
Shatabdi Express Hazrat Nizamuddin Under 2 hours
Gatimaan Express Hazrat Nizamuddin About 1 hour 40 minutes
Taj Express Hazrat Nizamuddin About 2 hours

The Shatabdi and Gatimaan are the fastest and most comfortable, reaching Mathura in under two hours, which is quicker than the drive. From Mathura Junction it is 12 km to Vrindavan, covered in 30 to 40 minutes, as our Mathura to Vrindavan distance guide explains.

The catch with the train is that final leg. You step off at Mathura Junction into the same crowd of auto drivers quoting tourist rates. This is why we arrange station pickup, so a car is simply waiting on the platform when your train arrives. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 with your train details.

By Bus from Delhi

The budget option. Buses run from Kashmiri Gate ISBT, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan to Mathura and Vrindavan.

  Detail
Fare ₹200 to ₹500, AC or non-AC
Travel time 4 to 5 hours
Departs Kashmiri Gate, Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan

It is cheap and it works, but it is slower than car or train, less comfortable, and it leaves you to sort out the last stretch inside Vrindavan yourself. For solo travellers on a tight budget it is fine. For families and elders, the car is worth the difference.

Isse Noida ka traffic bach jaata hai aur aap 9:30 baje tak Banke Bihari darshan ke liye pahunch jaate hain. Experience My India Delhi se pickup ke saath poora tour arrange karta hai. WhatsApp kijiye +91-7302265809.

The Best Time to Leave Delhi

This is the single most important decision on this entire page, more important than the route or the mode of travel.

Leave before 7:00 AM.

Leaving before seven clears the Noida expressway entry and the Mathura approach road before the local traffic builds. You arrive in Vrindavan by 9:00 or 9:30 AM, which lands you in the best morning darshan window at Banke Bihari, before it closes at noon.

Leave at nine or ten and two things go wrong at once. You hit traffic getting out of Delhi, and you arrive in Vrindavan around the time the temples shut for the afternoon, so you sit and wait until 5:30 PM. The same trip, three hours later, is a completely different and much worse day.

Planning the Return, Vrindavan to Delhi

The Vrindavan to Delhi distance is the same 160 to 180 km, but the return has its own trap.

Avoid Friday and Sunday evenings. The Delhi bound Yamuna Expressway fills with weekend return traffic after 4:00 PM, and it can add 45 to 90 minutes to your journey. If you are returning on a weekend, either leave Vrindavan by early afternoon or wait until after 8:00 PM for the traffic to clear.

For a same day trip, the ideal shape is to go out early, darshan through the morning, lunch and rest through the afternoon closure, evening darshan, then drive back after the light show. Experience My India plans the return timing into every package so you are not caught in it.

Mumbai to Vrindavan by Train

Pilgrims from Mumbai ask about this often, so here is the honest picture. There is no direct train to Vrindavan. You travel Mumbai to Mathura Junction, then 12 km on to Vrindavan.

  Detail
Rail distance About 1,400 km
Travel time 19 to 23 hours
Main trains August Kranti Rajdhani, Golden Temple Mail, Punjab Mail
From Mathura Junction 12 km, 30 to 40 minutes to Vrindavan

It is a long haul, so most Mumbai pilgrims either take an overnight train to Mathura or fly to Delhi and drive down. Either way, Experience My India arranges the Mathura Junction pickup and the onward transfer. For the fly and drive option, the Delhi routes above apply. Call +91-7302265809.

Ground Truth, What Nobody Tells You

The drive is easy. The last 12 km is not. The expressway is smooth. Then you exit at Mathura and the final stretch into Vrindavan’s temple lanes is slow, narrow and crowded. Budget 45 minutes for those last 12 km, not 15.

Your departure time decides your whole trip. Leave before 7:00 AM and you get morning darshan. Leave at 10:00 AM and you arrive as the temples close. Same distance, different day entirely.

Ola and Uber do not work reliably in Mathura and Vrindavan. Do not plan the local legs around app cabs. Book a car in advance or agree a fare with a local driver.

Weekend returns are the hidden delay. Friday and Sunday evenings on the Delhi bound expressway add up to 90 minutes. Plan the return before you leave.

A same day round trip works, but only if planned tightly. Delhi to Vrindavan and back in a day is genuinely comfortable if you leave early and sequence around the temple closures. Done loosely, it becomes exhausting.
