Kanpur to Vrindavan: Distance, Route and the Best Way to Travel

Quick answer. Kanpur to Vrindavan is about 340 km by road, roughly 6 hours via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, always reaching Mathura first, then about 15 km on to Vrindavan. By train, around 23 services run to Mathura Junction via Agra Cantt in about 5 hours, then a cab covers the last stretch. There is no direct fast train to Vrindavan itself and no direct flight, since Mathura and Vrindavan have no airport. A private taxi costs roughly ₹5,500 to ₹8,000 one way. Because the expressway passes Agra, the Taj Mahal folds easily into the trip. Experience My India has guided 50,000 plus pilgrims since 2018, rated 4.5 stars. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Introduction

Kanpur is all industry and the wide grey Ganga, a working city of leather and engines and commerce. Vrindavan is its opposite, a town of temple bells and the name of Krishna in the morning air. And the fine expressway between them lets you leave one for the other in a single comfortable day, with the Taj Mahal waiting on the way if you want it.

I am Gurudutt. I was born in Braj Bhoomi and I have arranged this journey for pilgrims coming from Kanpur and across central Uttar Pradesh since 2018. This guide gives you the real distance, the two road routes, every way to travel, and how to fold Agra and the Taj into the trip.

For everything to see once you arrive, our places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan guide covers both towns.

Kanpur to Vrindavan Distance at a Glance

Route Distance Travel time
Kanpur to Vrindavan by road About 340 to 350 km About 6 hours
Kanpur to Mathura by road About 340 km 5.5 to 6 hours
Mathura to Vrindavan About 15 km 35 to 45 minutes
Kanpur to Mathura Junction by train About 330 km rail About 5 hours
By air No direct flights Not practical

You will see figures from 337 km to 350 km quoted, and the difference is simply the road taken and whether you measure to Mathura or Vrindavan. Call it about 340 km and allow six hours, and you will plan correctly.

The Road Route, Two Ways

As with every approach to Braj, you always reach Mathura first. Vrindavan sits about 15 km beyond Mathura, so you drive to Mathura, then carry on the short final stretch. From Kanpur there are two good road choices.

Via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. This is the smooth, fast choice. You join the expressway and run west toward the Agra region, then take the Yamuna Expressway or NH-19 north to Mathura and on to Vrindavan. This is the route to choose if you want to add Agra and the Taj.

Via Etawah and the highway. A slightly more direct line across the plains through Etawah, favoured by some taxi operators as marginally shorter, though generally not as smooth as the expressway the whole way.

Both take around six hours. The expressway is the more comfortable ride and the one we generally use, especially for families and for anyone combining the trip with Agra. Toll applies, so carry FASTag. A local driver who knows the road keeps it smooth, which is what our Vrindavan Mathura tour by car service provides.

By Train via Mathura Junction

The train is a sensible, budget-friendly choice, and Kanpur is well connected to Mathura Junction.

  Detail
Rail distance About 330 km
Journey time to Mathura Junction About 5 hours on the faster trains
Trains available Around 23 weekly services via Agra Cantt
Fare Budget friendly, from a few hundred rupees across classes
From Mathura Junction to Vrindavan About 15 km, 35 to 45 minutes by road

Around twenty-three trains run the route each week, reaching Mathura Junction via Agra Cantt in roughly five hours. There is no direct fast train to Vrindavan itself, so you travel to Mathura Junction and cover the last 15 km by road.

Consider an overnight or early train, so you board in Kanpur in the evening or early morning and arrive at Mathura ready for darshan, without losing a day to travel. Experience My India arranges station pickup at Mathura Junction, so a car is waiting when your train arrives. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 with your train details. The last leg is covered in our Mathura to Vrindavan distance guide.

By Taxi, the Most Comfortable Way

For families, groups, or anyone combining the trip with Agra, a private taxi is the most comfortable way to travel door to door.

  Detail
Distance About 340 km via Mathura
Travel time About 6 hours
Sedan, one way About ₹5,500 to ₹7,000
SUV or Innova, one way About ₹7,000 to ₹8,500
Best for Families, groups, Agra combination trips

A taxi lets you leave Kanpur at your own hour, stop for meals at the expressway food courts, break the journey at Agra for the Taj if you wish, and reach Vrindavan without transfer hassle. Fares are quoted per vehicle, not per person, which makes a car economical for a family, and they rise during festivals and peak season. Experience My India arranges this with an experienced long-distance driver.

Kanpur to Vrindavan
Kanpur to Vrindavan

By Bus from Kanpur

The budget option. Buses run from Kanpur toward Mathura, operated by UP state transport and private operators such as IntrCity SmartBus.

  Detail
Fare About ₹400 to ₹900
Travel time About 5 to 7 hours
Route Kanpur to Mathura, then shared vehicles to Vrindavan
Note No direct fast bus to Vrindavan itself

Buses are cheap and run through the day, but they are slower and less comfortable than a taxi or train, and they leave you to arrange the final stretch from Mathura to Vrindavan. For solo travellers on a budget they work well. For families, the train or taxi is worth the difference.

Why There Are No Direct Flights

People sometimes search for a Kanpur to Vrindavan flight, so let me save you the trouble. There are no direct flights, because Mathura and Vrindavan have no airport.

Kanpur has an airport, but the nearest airports to Vrindavan are Agra, about 70 km away, and Delhi, plus the new Jewar airport. Flying from Kanpur would mean a connecting flight and then a long drive, which takes more time and costs more than simply taking the direct train or driving. For this route, road or rail is always the better choice.

Kanpur to Mathura Distance

Many travellers search for Kanpur to Mathura specifically, so here it is on its own.

Kanpur to Mathura is about 340 km by road, roughly five and a half to six hours via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, or about 330 km by rail in around five hours to Mathura Junction. Mathura is the practical arrival point for the region, and Vrindavan is an easy 15 km beyond it. If your trip centres on Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish, Mathura is your destination, covered in our Mathura temple timings guide.

Adding Agra and the Taj on the Way

Here is the Kanpur route’s lovely advantage. Because the Agra-Lucknow Expressway brings you right past Agra on the way to Braj, you can add the Taj Mahal to your pilgrimage with almost no detour.

A Kanpur pilgrim can break the drive at Agra, see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and then continue the short 70 km on to Vrindavan, turning a simple transfer into a Taj-and-Krishna trip. The Agra to Vrindavan leg is covered in our Agra to Vrindavan guide.

Combined trip What it adds
Kanpur, Agra, Braj The Taj Mahal plus Krishna’s Vrindavan
Kanpur, Braj direct A focused pilgrimage
Kanpur, Lucknow, Braj The wider Awadh and Braj circuit

Just note the Taj Mahal ticket is bought separately and is never part of a Braj package.

How to Plan the Trip

For a six-hour journey, a little planning makes the difference between a smooth day and a tiring one.

  • Leave Kanpur early. A morning departure means you reach Mathura by early afternoon, rest through the temple closure, and are ready for Vrindavan’s evening darshan. Leaving late means arriving tired with the best hours gone.
  • Base yourself in Braj. At about 340 km, Vrindavan is too far for a comfortable same-day return from Kanpur, so stay at least one night. For where to stay, our where to stay in Mathura and Vrindavan guide covers the areas.
  • Give Braj at least two days. Having travelled six hours, a single rushed day does not do it justice. Two or three days lets you cover Vrindavan, Mathura and Govardhan properly.

Best Time to Travel

Season Conditions
October to March Best. Pleasant for the drive and for Braj
April to June Very hot. Travel early, rest at midday
July to September Monsoon, cooler, occasional slower roads
December and January Watch for fog on the expressway, which slows the road badly before dawn

The distance never changes, but comfort does. Winter is ideal for both the drive and the destination, though December and January fog on the expressway can be dangerous before dawn, so take the train in deep winter. Our best time to visit guide covers the Braj calendar.

Ground Truth, What Nobody Tells You

  • You always go via Mathura. There is no separate direct road to Vrindavan. You reach Mathura first, then drive the final 15 km.
  • The expressway passes Agra, so add the Taj. This is the Kanpur route’s special advantage. Break at Agra for the Taj Mahal with almost no detour.
  • There are two road routes. The Agra-Lucknow Expressway is smoother and lets you add Agra; the Etawah highway is marginally shorter. The expressway is the better ride.
  • There are no direct flights, and flying is slower anyway. No airport at Mathura or Vrindavan. Flying via a connection takes longer than the direct train or drive.
  • Take the overnight or early train. Board in Kanpur in the evening, arrive at Mathura in the morning, and lose no daylight.
  • Base in Braj, do not day trip from Kanpur. At 340 km, Vrindavan is too far for a comfortable same-day return. Stay the night.

Know Before You Travel

  • There are no direct flights. Flying via a connection is slower.

Toll applies, so carry FASTag. Experience My India’s drivers take the best route for the day. Call +91-7302265809.

Conclusion

Kanpur to Vrindavan is a comfortable six hours across the plains of Uttar Pradesh, from a city of industry to a town of devotion. And because the expressway runs right past Agra, it hands you the Taj Mahal on the way if you want it, turning a simple transfer into one of the loveliest short journeys in North India.

Leave early, take the expressway, add Agra if you can, and stay at least a night so Braj gets the time it deserves.

Since 2018, Experience My India has brought pilgrims from Kanpur and across central Uttar Pradesh to Braj, more than 50,000 in all, and we are rated 4.5 stars by the families who trusted us. We handle the drive, the base and the darshan, so you simply arrive.
