Quick answer. Most Mathura temples open between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, close between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM, and reopen between 2:00 PM and 5:30 PM. Krishna Janmabhoomi runs 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM in summer, with Mangala Aarti at 5:30 AM. Dwarkadhish uses a Pushtimarg slot system, so come before 10:30 AM or after 4:00 PM. Entry to every temple is free. Experience My India has guided 50,000 plus pilgrims since 2018, rated 4.5 stars. Packages from ₹1,999. WhatsApp +91-7302265809.

Introduction

There is one sentence I have said to more pilgrims than any other, and I have usually said it while standing outside a locked temple gate with a family who has driven four hours to get there.

“It reopens at half past five.”

Mathura temple timings are not a detail. They are the whole architecture of your day. Every major temple here shuts for three to five hours after noon, and each one reopens at a different hour. Get that wrong and you will spend the best part of your trip sitting in a car park.

I am Gurudutt. I was born in Braj Bhoomi and I have guided pilgrims through these temples since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. This page gives you every timing I work with, verified against multiple sources and against what my team sees on the ground each morning.

Where sources disagree, and for two of these temples they genuinely do, I say so instead of picking one and pretending it is settled. If you want the same information for the other town, our Vrindavan and Mathura places to visit guide covers both.

Why Timings Decide Your Whole Day

A temple in Braj is not a monument that stays open for visitors. It is a household. The deity is woken, bathed, dressed, fed, rested and put to sleep, and the doors are only open to you during the parts of that day when the deity is receiving.

That is why the afternoon closure exists. It is not a lunch break for the staff. It is the deity resting. And it is why no amount of pleading at the gate will get you in.

Two blocks, then. Morning from 5:00 AM to noon. Evening from 4:00 PM onward. The hours in between belong to lunch, rest and travel between towns. Anyone who tells you they can fit ten temples into a single day is either lying or has never tried it.

Read this before you use the table. Braj temples shift their schedules with the season, with festival days, and occasionally with the temple management’s own decisions. Treat this as your planning table, then confirm on the morning of your visit. My team does exactly that before every tour group moves. Call +91-7302265809 on the day and we will tell you what is actually open.

Krishna Janmabhoomi Timings and Aarti Schedule

The birthplace itself, and the temple most people search for by name. It sits about 3 km from Mathura Junction in the Katra Keshav Dev area.

  Summer Winter
Morning darshan 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM
Evening darshan 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Mangala Aarti About 5:30 AM About 5:30 AM
Evening aarti About 6:30 PM Earlier, with sunset
Entry Free Free

Come for the Mangala Aarti at 5:30 AM if you can manage it. The complex is quiet, the queue has not formed, and the security check takes minutes instead of an hour.

The thing that catches almost everyone. Phones, cameras, bags and all electronics are banned inside the complex. There is a deposit counter outside, and the queue for that counter builds badly between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM, which means the queue to hand in your phone can be longer than the queue for darshan itself. Carry one small cloth bag and nothing else, and you walk straight past it.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes for darshan on an ordinary day. On Janmashtami it becomes hours, and our Janmashtami 2026 guide explains why you need to book months ahead.

Mathura Temple Timings
Temple Timings

Dwarkadhish Temple Timings

Here is where I have to be honest with you, because almost every website you will read on this subject is confidently wrong.

Dwarkadhish is a Pushtimarg temple. Worship follows the ashtayam seva tradition, which means darshan happens in a series of short windows through the day, with the curtain closing between each one, rather than one continuous morning session and one continuous evening session. That is why one site tells you the temple closes at 10:30 AM and another tells you 12:30 PM. Both are describing different jhanki slots.

The reliable rule for a visitor: arrive in the morning before 10:30 AM, or in the evening after 4:00 PM. Inside those windows you will get darshan. Outside them you are gambling.

The temple sits about 2.5 km from Krishna Janmabhoomi, roughly 15 minutes by e-rickshaw through the old city lanes. The Sandhya Aarti here is one of the most physically intense experiences in Braj, hundreds of voices inside an enclosed stone courtyard, and it is not for anyone who dislikes crowds.

Vishram Ghat and the Yamuna Aarti

The main ghat on the Yamuna, where Krishna is believed to have rested after killing Kansa. Open all day, no closure, no entry fee.

The Yamuna Aarti at sunset is the quiet high point of a Mathura day. Lamps on the water, priests on the steps, and the whole river turning gold. A shared boat ride costs ₹50 to ₹100.

The local sequence nobody publishes. Reach Vishram Ghat at 6:00 AM for the morning aarti on the water. When it ends, walk up the alley. You arrive at Dwarkadhish exactly as the morning darshan opens, and it is a two minute walk. Two of the best moments in Mathura, back to back, before most visitors have finished breakfast.

Gita Mandir (Birla Mandir) Timings

Built by Jugal Kishore Birla in 1946, and the one temple in Mathura where you can walk in during the afternoon when everything else is shut. All 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita are carved into the pillars, across 18 chapters, and the Gita Stambh tower stands in the garden.

  Timing
Summer 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Winter 5:30 AM to 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Entry Free
Location Mathura Vrindavan Road

That 2:00 PM reopening is the most useful fact on this page. It means the dead hours between noon and four are not dead after all. Gita Mandir sits on the Mathura Vrindavan road, so it fits naturally into the drive between the two towns, which is exactly how we schedule it. The full Mathura to Vrindavan route and distance guide shows where it falls on the road.

Bhuteshwar Mahadev Timings

One of the four ancient Shiva temples that guard the four directions of Mathura, and the guardian deity of the city. Braj tradition holds that a Krishna pilgrimage is not complete without paying respects to Mahadev, who guards the land where Krishna was born.

Opens around 5:00 AM, closes around noon, reopens in the afternoon and stays open into the evening. It is busiest on Mondays and during Shravan. Entry is free.

Dauji Temple, Baldeo, Timings

Dedicated to Balram, Krishna’s elder brother, and about 21 km from Mathura city in the town of Baldeo. The deity is roughly 8 feet tall, dark stone, in a dancing posture, and it is among the oldest in the whole of Braj.

  Timing
Morning 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Evening 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Entry Free
Distance from Mathura About 21 km, 40 minutes

Most tour operators skip Dauji entirely because it is 21 km off the main circuit. Braj tradition is clear that a Braj yatra is incomplete without Dauji darshan, and there is a reason the locals go. If it matters to you, tell us when you book and we will build it in. It fits neatly into the 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour.

Aarti Timings Across Both Towns

Darshan timings tell you when you can enter. Aarti timings tell you when it is worth being there.

Aarti Where When
Mangala Aarti ISKCON Vrindavan 4:30 AM
Mangala Aarti Krishna Janmabhoomi About 5:30 AM
Shringar Aarti Radha Raman Temple 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM
Morning Yamuna Aarti Vishram Ghat, Mathura About 6:00 AM
Sandhya Aarti Dwarkadhish Temple Evening, after reopening
Yamuna Aarti Keshi Ghat, Vrindavan About 6:30 PM
Evening Yamuna Aarti Vishram Ghat, Mathura At sunset
Prem Mandir light show Prem Mandir About 7:30 PM summer, 7:00 PM winter

If you can only attend one aarti in Mathura, make it the Yamuna Aarti at Vishram Ghat. If you can only attend one in Vrindavan, make it the Radha Raman Shringar at 8:00 AM, and the Radha Raman aarti timings guide explains why.

A One Day Darshan Plan Built on the Clock

This is not a wish list. This is what the timings actually allow.

Time Where Why then
5:30 AM Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mangala Aarti Short queue, quick security check
6:45 AM Vishram Ghat Morning Yamuna aarti on the water
7:15 AM Dwarkadhish Temple Two minute walk, opens as you arrive
8:30 AM Breakfast in Mathura Everything is about to close anyway
10:00 AM Gita Mandir Open until noon, then again from 2:00 PM
11:30 AM Drive to Vrindavan 12 km, 30 to 45 minutes
12:30 PM Lunch and rest Every temple is shut. Do not fight it
4:30 PM ISKCON Vrindavan First to reopen
5:30 PM Banke Bihari Opens at 5:30 PM in summer
7:00 PM Prem Mandir Arrive before the light show at 7:30 PM

That is nine hours of movement and six sacred stops, and it works because it is built around the closures rather than against them. It is also, more or less exactly, our Same Day Mathura Vrindavan Tour from ₹1,999 per person. If you want to see the alternatives, read how to visit Mathura and Vrindavan in one day.

How Festivals Change Everything

On Janmashtami, Holi, Radhashtami and Ekadashi, none of the tables on this page apply.

Janmashtami is the extreme case. Krishna Janmabhoomi stays open through the night, darshan queues at Banke Bihari run to several hours, and Vrindavan becomes one of the most crowded places in India for roughly 48 hours. Book three months ahead. Our Janmashtami 2026 guide has the full picture.

Ekadashi, which falls twice a month, is quieter but still changes crowd patterns sharply, particularly on the parikrama routes covered in our parikrama route and timings guide.

And for anyone planning around weather rather than festivals, our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide goes month by month.

Ground Truth, What Nobody Tells You

The published timing is when the gate opens, not when you get darshan. Add the shoe counter, which takes 15 to 20 minutes at every temple, and add the security queue at Janmabhoomi. Arriving at the opening time means you are inside 30 minutes later.

Winter timings are not a footnote. Banke Bihari opens a full hour later in winter, at 8:45 AM instead of 7:45 AM. Pilgrims who read a summer timing in December stand at a locked gate for an hour.

Nobody sells an official VIP darshan pass at Banke Bihari on the street. If someone offers you one, they are selling you nothing. What is actually possible is set out in our Banke Bihari darshan and passes page.

The 12 to 4 window is not wasted unless you waste it. Gita Mandir reopens at 2:00 PM. Vishram Ghat never closes. The drive between Mathura and Vrindavan takes 30 to 45 minutes. Put those three things in the middle of your day and you lose nothing.

Auto drivers quote four times the local rate. Keshi Ghat to Banke Bihari is a ₹20 to ₹30 ride. Tourists get quoted ₹100 to ₹150 on weekends. We use pre arranged private cars, which is why there is nothing to argue about at the gate. A Mathura Vrindavan tour by car usually costs less than a day of negotiating.

Know Before You Plan

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Mathura temple timings in 2026?

Most Mathura temples open between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM, close between 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM, and reopen between 2:00 PM and 5:30 PM. Krishna Janmabhoomi runs 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM in summer. Gita Mandir reopens earliest, at 2:00 PM. Every temple is free to enter. Experience My India confirms the day’s timings before every tour. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the Krishna Janmabhoomi timing?

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi opens at 5:00 AM and closes at 12:00 PM, then reopens at 4:00 PM and closes at 9:30 PM in summer. In winter it opens at 5:30 AM and the evening session runs 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Mangala Aarti is at about 5:30 AM. Entry is free, but phones, cameras and bags must be deposited outside. Experience My India plans every Mathura morning around this window.

Why do different websites give different Dwarkadhish timings?

Because Dwarkadhish is a Pushtimarg temple and follows the ashtayam seva tradition, meaning darshan happens in a series of short windows through the day rather than one continuous session. Different sites describe different jhanki slots and all of them look right in isolation. The reliable rule for a visitor is simple: arrive before 10:30 AM or after 4:00 PM. Experience My India schedules Dwarkadhish inside those windows on every tour.

Do Mathura temples close in the afternoon?

Yes. Almost every major temple in Mathura closes from around noon until between 2:00 PM and 5:30 PM, depending on the temple. This is not a staff break, it is the deity’s rest period in the daily seva cycle, and no amount of asking at the gate will change it. Gita Mandir is the exception, reopening at 2:00 PM. Experience My India uses that window for lunch and the drive to Vrindavan.

Are Mathura temples free to enter?

Yes. Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Gita Mandir, Bhuteshwar Mahadev, Vishram Ghat and Dauji Temple are all free. There is a nominal charge at the electronics deposit counter outside Krishna Janmabhoomi, and the museum inside the complex has a small separate ticket. Anyone selling you a paid entry pass on the street is not official. Experience My India charges for transport, hotel and guiding, never for darshan.

What is the aarti timing at Krishna Janmabhoomi?

Mangala Aarti at Krishna Janmabhoomi is at about 5:30 AM, and the evening aarti at about 6:30 PM, moving earlier in winter with sunset. Reach 15 minutes ahead, because the security queue and the electronics deposit counter both take time. The Mangala Aarti is the quietest and most intimate darshan of the day. Experience My India places it first in every Mathura itinerary. Call +91-7302265809.

How many temples can I cover in Mathura in one day?

Four to six, comfortably, if you follow the clock. Krishna Janmabhoomi at 5:30 AM, Vishram Ghat at 6:45 AM, Dwarkadhish at 7:15 AM, Gita Mandir at 10:00 AM, then travel to Vrindavan through the afternoon closure. Trying for more means arriving at locked gates. Experience My India’s Same Day Tour from ₹1,999 follows exactly this sequence.

Do temple timings change in winter?

Yes, and this catches more pilgrims than any other single thing. Banke Bihari opens a full hour later in winter, at 8:45 AM instead of 7:45 AM, and closes earlier in the evening at 4:30 PM instead of 5:30 PM. Krishna Janmabhoomi shifts by 30 minutes. Always check the season, not just the temple. Experience My India confirms the day’s timings before every tour group moves.

What is the Dauji Temple timing in Baldeo?

Dauji Temple in Baldeo, dedicated to Balram, opens at 7:00 AM and closes at 12:00 PM, then reopens at 5:30 PM and closes at 9:00 PM. Entry is free. It sits about 21 km from Mathura, roughly 40 minutes by road, and most operators skip it. Braj tradition holds that a Braj yatra is incomplete without Dauji darshan. Experience My India includes it on request. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the Gita Mandir timing in Mathura?

Gita Mandir, also called Birla Mandir, opens at 5:00 AM and closes at 12:00 PM, then reopens at 2:00 PM and closes at 8:00 PM in summer, 8:30 PM in winter. Entry is free. That 2:00 PM reopening makes it the single most useful temple in Mathura, because it is open during the hours when everything else is shut. It sits on the Mathura Vrindavan road.

Which temples are open during the afternoon closure?

Gita Mandir reopens at 2:00 PM, earlier than any other major temple in Mathura. Vishram Ghat never closes at all. Kans Qila is open through daylight hours. Everything else in both towns is shut between roughly noon and 4:00 PM. Experience My India uses that window for lunch, hotel check in and the 12 km drive between Mathura and Vrindavan, so nothing is wasted.

How do I confirm temple timings before I travel?

Check the season first, since summer and winter differ by up to an hour. Then check whether your dates fall on Ekadashi, Janmashtami, Holi or Radhashtami, because none of the standard timings apply on those days. Then confirm on the morning of your visit, because temple managements do adjust. Experience My India’s local team does this daily. WhatsApp +91-7302265809 and we will tell you what is open on your date.

Conclusion

Mathura temple timings look like a boring detail until the moment you are standing outside a locked gate with your parents, four hours from home, and the guard tells you to come back at half past five.

Get the clock right and this town opens for you. Get it wrong and you see a lot of walls.

Since 2018, Experience My India has planned this journey for more than 50,000 pilgrims, and we are rated 4.5 stars by the families who trusted us with it. Every itinerary we build starts with the timings on this page and works backwards.
