| Holi in Vrindavan 2027 centres on Holika Dahan on Sunday, 21 March 2027 and Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) on Monday, 22 March 2027, which is a national gazetted holiday. I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. I have worked every Holi season here for years, so I will give you the dates as the temples set them, tell you honestly which are firm and which shift, and show you how to plan around the crowds instead of being crushed by them.
When is Holi in Vrindavan 2027?
The two firm, nationally observed dates are the anchor of your trip.
| Day | Date 2027 | What happens |
| Holika Dahan (Chhoti Holi) | Sunday, 21 March 2027 | The evening bonfire on Phalguna Purnima |
| Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) | Monday, 22 March 2027 | The main day of colour across all of Braj |
These two dates are well established for 2027. Confirm the exact Holika Dahan muhurat on a local panchang, as it depends on the Bhadra period and your city.
Because 21 March is a Sunday and 22 March is a Monday, 2027 gives a natural long weekend for the main Holi, which is worth planning around because it also means heavier crowds.
Braj Holi 2027 calendar: the forty-day festival
Braj ki Holi is the longest Holi in the world. It opens on Vasant Panchami with the planting of the holi-danda and the first gulal, and it closes with Huranga at Dauji the day after Holi. Between those, the famous days arrive in close succession in mid-March.
| Event | Place | date 2027 |
| Vasant Panchami (season opens) | Across Braj | Late January to early February |
| Laddu Holi | Barsana | 15 March |
| Lathmar Holi | Barsana | 16 March |
| Lathmar Holi | Nandgaon | 17 March |
| Phoolon wali Holi (Rangbharni Ekadashi) | Banke Bihari, Vrindavan | 18 March |
| Widow’s Holi | Gopinath Temple, Vrindavan | Mid to late March |
| Holika Dahan | Across Braj | Sunday, 21 March |
| Rangwali Holi | Mathura, Vrindavan, all Braj | Monday, 22 March |
| Huranga | Dauji (Baldeo) | Tuesday, 23 March |
Only Holika Dahan (21 March) and Rangwali Holi (22 March) are firm. The village dates are fixed each year by the Barsana, Nandgaon and Banke Bihari temple trusts and announced closer to the festival, so treat the mid-March dates as indicative and confirm on the panchang or the official temple calendar before you travel.

Laddu Holi and Lathmar Holi at Barsana
The most internationally famous Braj Holi is the Lathmar Holi at Barsana, the village of Radha, around 16 March. It is preceded by Laddu Holi, when Nandgaon’s invitation to play is answered with a shower of laddus. In the Lathmar tradition, the women of Barsana playfully drive off the men of Nandgaon with wooden laths while the men shield themselves, re-enacting Krishna’s teasing of Radha. Reach the Radha Rani temple in Barsana early in the morning, because the lanes fill fast.
Lathmar Holi at Nandgaon
The day after Barsana, 17 March, the play moves to Nandgaon, Krishna’s village, where the men of Barsana come to answer, and the roles reverse. It is less crowded with photographers than Barsana but just as spirited.
Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari
The gentlest and most beautiful of all is the Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari, 18 March on Rangbharni Ekadashi. For a few minutes, the priests shower the whole hall with mountains of marigold, rose and champa petals while Banke Bihari himself plays. It is short, it is crowded, and it is the one many families and older pilgrims choose over the colour and crowds of the villages.
Widow’s Holi in Vrindavan
At the Gopinath Temple in Vrindavan, the widows of the town, long excluded from colour by old custom, now play Holi with gulal and flowers. It has become one of the most moving days in the Braj calendar, a quiet act of social change, and it falls in the days before the main Holi.
Rangwali Holi and Huranga at Dauji
On 22 March, all of Braj plays Rangwali Holi. The day after, 23 March, comes Huranga at the Dauji temple in Baldeo, the temple of Krishna’s brother Balaram, a rumbustious Holi where women tear the men’s clothing to strips, one of the least touristy and most authentic days of the whole festival.
Holi 2027 government holidays
Holi is observed as a public holiday, but which day and how many days depends on where you are.
| Day | Date 2027 | Holiday status |
| Holika Dahan | Sunday, 21 March 2027 | A restricted or optional holiday in many states; a Sunday in 2027 |
| Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) | Monday, 22 March 2027 | A gazetted national holiday; banks (RBI), central offices, most schools closed |
Rangwali Holi on 22 March 2027 is the nationally recognised holiday. Holika Dahan on 21 March is a Sunday this year, so most people already have both days off.
Regional Holi dates across India 2027
Holi is not one festival on one day. Across India it takes different names and falls on slightly different dates in 2027.
| Region | Festival | Date 2027 |
| Braj (Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana) | Lathmar, Phoolon wali, Rangwali Holi | 15 to 23 March |
| West Bengal, Odisha, Assam | Dol Purnima, Dol Jatra, Basanta Utsav | 21 to 22 March |
| Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh | Rang Panchami | 27 March |
| Punjab | Hola Mohalla | 23 March |
| Manipur | Yaosang | From around 21 March |
| Goa | Shigmo | March, dates vary |
Holi dates follow the lunar calendar and can vary by a day between regions and traditions.
Regional government holidays
The national gazetted holiday is Rangwali Holi on 22 March 2027. Beyond that, state government holiday lists differ, and this is where people get caught out. Several North Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, where Mathura and Vrindavan sit, often declare a public holiday for Holi and sometimes for a second connected day. Southern states more commonly list Holi as a restricted or optional holiday. West Bengal observes Dol Jatra, and Punjab may add Hola Mohalla on 23 March. Because each state government publishes its own holiday list for the year, confirm your state’s official 2027 calendar for the exact days off, rather than assuming the national date applies everywhere.
How to plan Holi in Vrindavan
Holi is the single busiest week in Braj, and planning is everything. Decide first what kind of Holi you want: the colour and crowds of Lathmar at Barsana, the gentle petals of the flower Holi at Banke Bihari, or the calmer temple Holi around Vrindavan. Then book, because hotels within reach of the temples fill months ahead. Wear old white cotton, closed shoes you do not mind staining, and carry a scarf. Keep phones in waterproof cases, reach the village Holis early in the morning, and never take a vehicle deep into Barsana or Nandgaon on the day, because the lanes seize up completely. Our Mathura to Vrindavan distance and route guide helps with the approach, and the places to see in Vrindavan and Mathura guide with the wider trip.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. Holi here is not the organised, ticketed event some travellers expect. It is loud, wet, packed and utterly alive, and it is wonderful precisely because it is not controlled. Two honest cautions. First, book by December 2026 for a mid-March 2027 trip, because the good hotels near the temples are gone by January and prices climb sharply. Second, match the day to your group: Lathmar at Barsana is a young person’s crush of colour and crowds, while the Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari and the temple Holis are far kinder to families and older pilgrims. And remember the village dates are set by the temple trusts and confirmed nearer the time, so build a day or two of flexibility into your plan.
Why Experience My India is the right choice
I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I have worked every Holi season in Braj for years. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We track the temple trusts’ announced dates, get you to the village Holis at the right early hour, arrange the hotel and the transport that Holi week makes so hard to find, and choose the days that suit your group. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.
Tip from Gurudutt: if you are bringing family or elders, build your trip around the Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari, around 18 March, rather than Lathmar at Barsana. You still get true Braj Holi, the flower shower with Bihari ji himself, but without the physical crush of the village lanes. Reach the temple early, because the hall fills long before the petals fly.
