Quick answer
The Govardhan Parikrama is a roughly 21 km clockwise circuit around Govardhan Hill, traditionally started and finished at Daan Ghati Mandir or Mansi Ganga. On foot it takes 5 to 7 hours at a steady pace or 1.5 to 2 hours by car or e-rickshaw for those who cannot walk it. Shorter routes exist: the Badi (outer) at about 12 km and the Chhoti (inner) at about 9 km. The path is open 24 hours, free and lined with kunds and shrines like Mansi Ganga, Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund and Jatipura. Start early, around 4 to 5:30 AM. To arrange it with transport and support, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The Govardhan Parikrama is the walk that changes people. It is a 21 km circle on foot around Giriraj Govardhan, the hill Krishna lifted on one finger and it is unlike any temple darshan, because here the whole hill is the deity and the path is the prayer. Here, from a guide born in Braj, is the verified route, the real distance and time, the different ways to do it, the sacred places along the way and the best time to walk it. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour package, which includes Govardhan.

Key takeaways

  • The full Govardhan Parikrama is about 21 km, clockwise around Giriraj Govardhan.
  • It starts and ends at the same point, usually Daan Ghati Mandir or Mansi Ganga.
  • On foot it takes 5 to 7 hours; by car or e-rickshaw about 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Shorter options: the Badi (outer) route at about 12 km and the Chhoti (inner) at about 9 km.
  • Barefoot is traditional but not mandatory; footwear for health reasons is fine.
  • The path is open 24 hours and completely free.
  • Start early, 4 to 5:30 AM and walk in the cool months, October to March.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. I have walked and arranged this parikrama countless times, so every distance, time and stop below comes from the marg itself, not a map.

Govardhan Parikrama distance and where it starts

The full parikrama is a circle of about 21 km around Govardhan Hill and because it is a circle, wherever you join is where you finish. Including the detours to Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar, some pilgrims cover closer to 23 km. It is walked clockwise, with Giriraj always on your right.

The conventional starting point is Daan Ghati Mandir, for good reasons: you take darshan there first, the marg is easy to find and there are shops, shoe storage, tea and water right at the gate before dawn. Mansi Ganga in the heart of Govardhan town is the other traditional start, where pilgrims take a holy dip first and those staying at Jatipura or near Radha Kund often begin from there. All are valid; the clockwise circuit around Giriraj is what matters. If you come by car, Daan Ghati is the easiest point to be dropped and later collected. The path is open every day, all 24 hours and is completely free.

Types of Govardhan Parikrama

There is more than one way to complete the circuit and choosing the right one matters, especially for families and elders.

Type Distance Who it suits
Full parikrama on foot About 21 km (23 with detours) Most pilgrims
Badi (outer) parikrama About 12 km A shorter walking circuit
Chhoti (inner) parikrama About 9 km Elders and those short on time
By car or e-rickshaw The full loop Families and senior citizens
Dandavati parikrama 21 km, prostrating The most devout, over several days
Govardhan Parikrama
Govardhan Parikrama

Walking the full 21 km

This is what most pilgrims mean by the parikrama: the complete 21 km circle on foot, at a steady, unhurried pace, pausing at the kunds. It is a full morning’s walk and a genuine act of devotion.

The shorter Chhoti and Badi routes

If the full distance is too much, the Chhoti (inner) parikrama of about 9 km covers Uddhav Kund, Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar, while the Badi (outer) route of about 12 km takes the outer path through Anyor, Punchari and Jatipura. Both are complete acts of parikrama.

By car or e-rickshaw

For senior citizens, families with children or anyone who cannot walk the distance, the full loop can be done by car or e-rickshaw in about 1.5 to 2 hours, stopping for darshan at the main kunds. This is how we take most elderly pilgrims, so nobody misses Giriraj.

Dandavati Parikrama

The most arduous form is the dandavati parikrama, where the devotee prostrates full length, rises, steps to where their hands reach and prostrates again, all the way around. It can take several days and is undertaken only by the most devout.

How long the Govardhan Parikrama takes

The time depends entirely on how you walk it.

How Time
Walking at a steady pace 5 to 7 hours
Walking with temple stops 6 to 8 hours
Barefoot 7 to 9 hours
By car or e-rickshaw 1.5 to 2 hours

Start early so you finish before the afternoon heat, especially in the warmer months.

The Govardhan Parikrama route and its sacred places

The marg is not a set of checkpoints so much as layers of sacred memory. These are the main places you pass and the ones worth pausing at.

  • Mansi Ganga: the sacred kund in Govardhan town, believed to have been manifested by Krishna and a traditional starting point for a holy dip.
  • Daan Ghati Mandir: the conventional start, tied to Krishna’s playful daan leela, where he took a toll of butter and curd.
  • Haridev Temple: an ancient temple near the starting area.
  • Kusum Sarovar: a beautiful sandstone kund and garden where Radha gathered flowers, one of the loveliest spots on the route.
  • Radha Kund and Shyam Kund: among the most spiritually intense places in all of Braj, especially Kartik Purnima.
  • Govind Kund: linked to Indra’s surrender to Krishna after the lifting of Govardhan.
  • Jatipura (Mukharvind): where devotees offer prayers directly to Giriraj at the Mukharvind, the “mouth” of Govardhan.
  • Punchari ka Lota: at the “tail” of the hill, a place associated with devotion and loyalty.

Pause at even two or three of these and the walk changes from an act of endurance into something far deeper. For the story behind the hill itself, read our history of Govardhan and why Krishna lifted it.

Best time to do Govardhan Parikrama

Best time of day

Start early, between 4:00 and 5:30 AM, before sunrise. This lets you walk the hardest stretches in the cool dark, finish before the afternoon heat and share the marg with the quiet, serious pilgrims of the pre-dawn rather than the midday crowds.

Best season and days

October to March is the comfortable season for the walk. The most auspicious days draw enormous crowds: Guru Purnima, when the great Mudia mela fills Govardhan; Govardhan Puja and Annakut, the day after Diwali; Kartik Purnima; and the Ekadashi and Purnima days through Kartik month. The parikrama is at its most charged then, but also at its most crowded, so a normal cool-season morning is easier for a first walk.

Important rules and tips

  • Barefoot is traditional but not required. Many walk barefoot out of reverence, but footwear for health or medical reasons is completely accepted.
  • Do not take stones or soil from the hill. Giriraj is worshipped as the deity himself, so the hill is honoured, not collected from or climbed.
  • Carry water and go light. There are shops and rest points along the way, but water and a small bag help avoid heavy loads.
  • Stay on the marked marg. Road building has altered some sections, so follow the signs and avoid new shortcuts or walk with someone who knows the path.
  • Mind your belongings in the busy town stretches.

How to reach Govardhan

Govardhan town is about 22 km from Mathura and roughly 22 to 26 km from Vrindavan, a 45-minute to one-hour drive. Most pilgrims come by car or e-rickshaw and are dropped at Daan Ghati. Our Mathura to Vrindavan distance and route guide helps with the wider approach and Govardhan pairs naturally with nearby Barsana on a longer trip.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Twenty-one kilometres is a real distance and the mistake first-timers make is starting late, in shoes not made for it, without water and then struggling by mid-morning. Start before dawn, go at a pace you can hold and pause at the kunds rather than racing the clock. If you are bringing elders or you simply cannot walk that far, take the Chhoti route or do the loop by car with darshan stops, because a parikrama completed with love by car is worth far more than a full walk abandoned halfway. And do not treat Giriraj as a photo stop; the whole hill is the Lord here.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I have walked and arranged this parikrama countless times. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We start you before dawn, walk or drive the marg at your pace, arrange the car support that lets elders complete the full loop and stop at the kunds that matter with the stories told on the ground. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you are walking the full 21 km, start from Daan Ghati by 5:00 AM and keep Giriraj on your right the whole way. Pause at Kusum Sarovar and Radha Kund, drink water often and you will finish by late morning, calm rather than exhausted. If elders are with you, let them do the loop by car and meet you at the kunds.
