The two ponds sit right next to each other near the base of Govardhan Hill, on the Govardhan parikrama route, in the area also called Radha Kund town. Krishna had killed a demon named Arishtasura, who had come in the form of a bull. Because the bull is a symbol of dharma, killing it, even a demon in that form, was said to carry a taint. Radha, in a moment of divine play, told Krishna that he had incurred the sin of killing a cow-like creature and could not touch her until he had purified himself by bathing in all the holy waters of the world.
Krishna struck the ground with his heel, and the waters of all the sacred rivers and tirthas of the world rushed to that spot and filled it. He bathed there, and that pond became Shyam Kund.
Radha, seeing this, was not to be outdone. With her sakhis, the gopis, she dug a second pond right beside it, using her bangles to break the earth. When it was ready, all the holy waters of the world begged Radha to allow them to enter her kund as well. She permitted them, and so Radha Kund was filled with the same sacred waters.
Because Radha created hers on the day of Ahoi Ashtami, that day became the most auspicious for bathing there. And because the two were dug side by side in that divine exchange, they are forever worshipped together.
Why These Are the Holiest Waters in Braj
