Introduction

The distances inside Braj look tiny on a map, and that is exactly what fools people.

Govardhan to Barsana is 20 km. Vrindavan to Govardhan is 25. You look at those numbers and think, we will do the whole circuit in an afternoon. Then you actually drive it, with the parikrama on foot, the climb at Barsana, the temple closures, and the narrow roads through five villages, and the afternoon turns into a very rushed, very tired day.

I am Gurudutt. I was born in Braj Bhoomi and I have driven this circuit more times than I can count, guiding pilgrims since 2018. This page gives you every distance between every town in Braj, honestly, plus the one thing the distance charts never tell you, which is the right order to drive them in.

For the twin towns themselves, our Mathura to Vrindavan distance guide covers that short hop separately.

The Complete Braj Distance Matrix

Here is what no other page gives you. Every town, to every other town, in one grid. Distances are by road and approximate, because the exact figure shifts with the route, as our Mathura to Vrindavan distance guide explains in detail.

From / To Mathura Vrindavan Govardhan Barsana Nandgaon Gokul
Mathura 12 km 22 km 45 km 50 km 15 km
Vrindavan 12 km 22 to 25 km 45 to 50 km 50 km 22 km
Govardhan 22 km 22 to 25 km 20 km 25 km 35 km
Barsana 45 km 45 to 50 km 20 km 8 km 55 km
Nandgaon 50 km 50 km 25 km 8 km 60 km
Gokul 15 km 22 km 35 km 55 km 60 km

Read across the row from where you are, down to the column of where you are going. That is your distance. Every one is explained in its own section below.

Vrindavan to Govardhan Distance

  Detail
Distance About 22 to 25 km
Travel time 40 to 50 minutes
Road Via Chhatikara and the Govardhan road
Taxi fare, one way ₹500 to ₹800

Govardhan is the hill Krishna lifted on one finger to shelter the villagers from Indra’s storm. The parikrama around it is 21 km on foot, taking five to seven hours, and this is the part that eats your day. The drive is only 40 minutes. The parikrama is most of a day.

Most families cannot walk 21 km, and there is no shame in that. A vehicle follows the route with stops at Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar and Daan Ghati, which is how we do it for elderly pilgrims. The history behind the hill is in our history of Govardhan Parvat guide, and the full walking route is in the parikrama route and timings guide.

Note that Govardhan to Vrindavan and Vrindavan to Govardhan are the same road, so you will see both searched. It is 22 to 25 km either way.

Govardhan to Barsana Distance

  Detail
Distance About 20 km
Travel time 30 to 35 minutes
Road Direct via Barsana Road
Taxi fare, one way ₹400 to ₹600
On foot, pad yatra 6 to 7 hours

This is the shortest hop between two major Braj towns, and it is the natural next step after the Govardhan parikrama. Twenty kilometres, half an hour by car.

Barsana is Radha’s birthplace, and the Radha Rani temple sits on top of Bhanugarh Hill, which means a climb of around 200 steps once you arrive. A palanquin is available for those who need it. The temple timings are in our Barsana temple timings 2026 guide, and the story of the town is in the Radha Rani Temple Barsana guide.

Some devotees walk this stretch as a pad yatra, which takes six to seven hours and is a devotional act in itself. Most take the car.

Barsana to Mathura Distance

  Detail
Distance About 45 km
Travel time 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes
Road Via Chhata and NH-19
Taxi fare, one way ₹800 to ₹1,200

Barsana is the far corner of the Braj circuit, about 45 km from Mathura and 45 to 50 km from Vrindavan. This is the distance that surprises people, because they think of Barsana as close, and on the circuit it is the longest single leg.

The road runs through Chhata and joins the highway. It is a comfortable drive on a normal day and a slow one during Lathmar Holi, when Barsana becomes one of the most crowded places in India. If Holi is your plan, book six weeks ahead.

Vrindavan to Gokul Distance

  Detail
Distance About 22 km
Travel time 40 to 50 minutes
Road Via Mathura, then across toward the Yamuna’s east bank
Taxi fare, one way ₹500 to ₹700

Here is a fact that catches people out. Gokul is not near Vrindavan. It sits on the other side of Mathura, on the east bank of the Yamuna, about 15 km from Mathura and roughly 22 km from Vrindavan.

Gokul is where the infant Krishna was hidden from Kansa, and Raman Reti is the sandy expanse where he played. Because it is on the opposite side of the river from Vrindavan, it does not fit neatly into a Vrindavan afternoon. Plan it as a morning stop, ideally paired with Mathura, since they are only 15 km apart.

Gokul to Vrindavan and Vrindavan to Gokul are the same 22 km either way.

Nandgaon, the 8 km Nobody Plans For

  Detail
Distance from Barsana About 8 km
Travel time 15 to 20 minutes
Significance Krishna’s home with Nanda Baba and Yashoda

Nandgaon sits just 8 km from Barsana, and this is the single most useful fact on this page for anyone planning the circuit.

Because it is so close to Barsana, and because the two are linked in the Radha and Krishna story, you should always visit them together. Barsana is Radha’s village, Nandgaon is Krishna’s. The famous Lathmar Holi is played between the two, with the men of Nandgaon coming to Barsana. Doing one without the other, when they are only 8 km apart, is a mistake pilgrims make because no distance chart puts them side by side.

Nand Bhavan, the temple on the hill at Nandgaon, is the main stop. It is quieter than Barsana and the climb is gentler.

Vrindavan to Agra Distance

  Detail
Distance About 70 km
Travel time 1.5 to 2 hours
Road Via NH-44
Taxi fare, one way ₹1,200 to ₹1,800

Many pilgrims combine Braj with the Taj Mahal, and Agra sits about 70 km from Vrindavan, an hour and a half to two hours by road on NH-44.

This works well because Agra is on the way if you are travelling from or toward Delhi. Our Same Day Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour and the 3 Days Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour from Delhi both fold the Taj Mahal into the Braj route without backtracking.

The Best Route Order for the Braj Circuit

This is the section the distance charts never give you, and it matters more than any single distance.

The right order is: Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, Mathura.

Stop From previous Why this order
Vrindavan Start Your base, the twin-town temples
Govardhan 22 to 25 km Do the parikrama in the morning while it is cool
Barsana 20 km Radha’s birthplace, climb before the afternoon heat
Nandgaon 8 km Right next to Barsana, never skip it
Gokul 60 km, or via Mathura The long leg back, on the Yamuna’s east bank
Mathura 15 km from Gokul End at Krishna Janmabhoomi, close to your exit road

The logic is simple. You move outward from Vrindavan to the far corner at Barsana and Nandgaon, then loop back through Gokul and Mathura on the return, ending near the Delhi and Agra roads. Do it in the wrong order and you double back across Braj twice, adding two hours for nothing.

This is a two day circuit at a comfortable pace, or a very long single day. Our 3 Days Mathura Vrindavan Tour covers it properly, and the 84 Kos Parikrama Tour does the complete 252 km version for those doing it in full.

How Long the Full Circuit Takes

Circuit Total distance Realistic time
Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, back About 100 km round trip One long day
Full outer Braj including Gokul and Mathura About 137 km round trip Two days, comfortable
Complete 84 Kos parikrama About 252 km 4 to 5 days

The 137 km round trip is the number worth remembering. On paper it is nothing, four or five hours of pure driving. In practice, with the Govardhan parikrama, the Barsana climb, five sets of temple timings and lunch, it is a genuine two day journey. Anyone who sells you the full outer circuit as a single comfortable day has not accounted for the parikrama.

Taxi Fares for the Braj Circuit

Journey Fair cab fare, one way Fair cab fare, round trip
Vrindavan to Govardhan ₹500 to ₹800 ₹800 to ₹1,200
Govardhan to Barsana ₹400 to ₹600
Barsana to Mathura ₹800 to ₹1,200
Full day Braj circuit by car ₹2,500 to ₹4,000
Vrindavan to Agra ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 ₹2,500 to ₹3,500

A full day car hire for the whole circuit works out cheaper and far less stressful than paying leg by leg, because you are not renegotiating a fare in every village. This is exactly what a Vrindavan Mathura tour by car is built for, and it is included in every multi day package.

Ground Truth, What Nobody Tells You

The distances are small. The days are long. Govardhan to Barsana is 20 km, but between them sits a 21 km parikrama and a 200 step climb. Plan by the day, not by the kilometre.

Barsana and Nandgaon are 8 km apart. Always do both. Pilgrims skip Nandgaon because no chart shows how close it is. It is 15 minutes from Barsana. Skipping it is skipping half the story.

Gokul is on the wrong side of the river for a Vrindavan afternoon. It sits east of Mathura. Pair it with Mathura in the morning, not with Vrindavan in the evening.

The route order decides your day. Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, Mathura. Get it wrong and you cross Braj twice.

Festival days rewrite every estimate. Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Govardhan Puja can add one to two hours to any leg. Book ahead and start early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the distance from Govardhan to Barsana?

The Govardhan to Barsana distance is about 20 km, taking 30 to 35 minutes by car via the direct Barsana Road. It is the shortest hop between two major Braj towns and the natural next step after the Govardhan parikrama. Some devotees walk it as a pad yatra, which takes six to seven hours. A cab costs ₹400 to ₹600. Experience My India includes both in its 3 and 4 day circuits. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the distance from Vrindavan to Govardhan?

Vrindavan to Govardhan is about 22 to 25 km, taking 40 to 50 minutes by road via Chhatikara. The drive is short, but the Govardhan parikrama around the hill is 21 km on foot and takes five to seven hours, which is what actually fills the day. Elderly pilgrims complete the parikrama by vehicle with stops at Radha Kund and Kusum Sarovar. Experience My India arranges this. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the distance from Barsana to Mathura?

Barsana to Mathura is about 45 km, taking one hour to one hour fifteen minutes via Chhata and NH-19. Barsana is the far corner of the Braj circuit and this is its longest single leg, which surprises pilgrims who assume it is close. From Vrindavan it is 45 to 50 km. Experience My India plans the route so Barsana is reached before the afternoon heat. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the distance from Vrindavan to Gokul?

Vrindavan to Gokul is about 22 km, taking 40 to 50 minutes. Gokul sits on the east bank of the Yamuna near Mathura, not near Vrindavan, so it does not fit a Vrindavan afternoon. It is only 15 km from Mathura, so pair it with your Mathura darshan in the morning. Gokul is where the infant Krishna was hidden from Kansa. Experience My India includes it in 2 day and longer packages.

How far is Nandgaon from Barsana?

Nandgaon is just 8 km from Barsana, a 15 to 20 minute drive. Because they are so close, and because Barsana is Radha’s village and Nandgaon is Krishna’s, you should always visit them together. The famous Lathmar Holi is played between the two. Pilgrims often skip Nandgaon simply because no distance chart shows how close it is. Experience My India always includes both. Call +91-7302265809.

Can I cover the whole Braj circuit in one day?

You can cover Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon in one long day, about 100 km round trip from Vrindavan. Adding Gokul and Mathura makes it about 137 km, which is genuinely a two day journey once you account for the 21 km Govardhan parikrama and the Barsana climb. Anyone selling the full outer circuit as one comfortable day has not counted the parikrama. Experience My India’s 3 day tour paces it properly.

What is the best route order for the Braj circuit?

The best order is Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul, then Mathura. You move outward to the far corner at Barsana and Nandgaon, then loop back through Gokul and Mathura, ending near the Delhi and Agra exit roads. Done in the wrong order you cross Braj twice and lose two hours. Experience My India sequences every circuit this way. Call +91-7302265809.

How far is Vrindavan from Agra?

Vrindavan to Agra is about 70 km, taking 1.5 to 2 hours via NH-44. Many pilgrims combine the Taj Mahal with Braj, and since Agra sits on the route to and from Delhi, it adds little backtracking. Experience My India runs a Same Day Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour and a 3 Days Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour from Delhi that fold Agra in. Call +91-7302265809.

What is the total distance of the Braj parikrama?

The complete 84 Kos Braj parikrama is about 252 km and covers the entire sacred land over four to five days. The shorter outer circuit of Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon, Gokul and Mathura is about 137 km round trip and takes two days. The Govardhan parikrama alone is 21 km. Experience My India offers all three scales. Call +91-7302265809.

How much does a Braj circuit taxi cost?

A full day car hire for the Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon circuit costs about ₹2,500 to ₹4,000, which is cheaper and less stressful than paying leg by leg and renegotiating in every village. Individual legs run ₹400 to ₹1,200 depending on distance. Experience My India includes a private car in every multi day package, so fares are settled in advance. Call +91-7302265809.

Which towns should I not skip in Braj?

Do not skip Nandgaon, which sits 8 km from Barsana and completes the Radha and Krishna story. Do not skip Radha Kund near Govardhan, one of the holiest spots in Braj. And do not treat Gokul as an afterthought, since it is where Krishna’s infancy unfolded. The temples are the obvious stops, but these three are where pilgrims most often cut corners. Experience My India builds all of them into the circuit. Call +91-7302265809.

Conclusion

The distances inside Braj are small enough to fool anyone. Twenty kilometres here, twenty five there. What the numbers hide is the parikrama, the climb, the five sets of temple timings, and the route order that decides whether your day flows or doubles back on itself.

Now you have all of it in one chart, which is more than any other page gives you.

Since 2018, Experience My India has driven this circuit with more than 50,000 pilgrims, and we are rated 4.5 stars by the families who trusted us. Book a package and the route, the order and the fares are simply handled.
