The History Behind the Ghat
Keshi Ghat is named for the demon Keshi, whom Kansa sent in the form of a wild horse to kill the young Krishna. Krishna defeated him here, and afterwards bathed in the Yamuna at this spot, which is why the ghat is considered a place of purification.
The ghat as you see it was built in the 17th century by Queen Laxmi Devi of Bharatpur, and it is one of the few original ghats still standing intact in Vrindavan. The sandstone architecture, the arched pavilions and the wide steps down to the water are all from that period.
