Lord Krishna was born in Mathura, on the banks of the Yamuna in what is now Uttar Pradesh. But not in a temple or a palace. He was born inside a prison cell, where his parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, were held in chains by Devaki’s own brother, the cruel king Kansa. That exact cell is the reason Mathura is one of the seven holiest cities of India and the reason millions come here every year: to stand at the very spot where God chose to enter the world in captivity, to free it.

The story of Krishna’s birth

The story begins with a prophecy. Kansa, the tyrant of Mathura, was told by a divine voice that the eighth child of his sister Devaki would be the cause of his death. Terrified, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva and, one by one, killed their first six new-born children. The seventh child, Balaram, was mystically transferred to the womb of Vasudeva’s other wife, Rohini, in nearby Gokul and so was saved. Then, on the eighth pregnancy, at midnight on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada, under the Rohini star, Lord Krishna was born, the Supreme Lord himself, come as the eighth avatar of Vishnu to end Kansa’s reign of terror and restore dharma to the earth.

The night of the birth and the crossing of the Yamuna

What happened next is the heart of the story. At the moment of Krishna’s birth, the prison guards fell into a deep sleep, the iron chains fell from Vasudeva’s hands and the locked doors of the cell opened on their own. A divine voice told Vasudeva to carry the child to Gokul, across the Yamuna and exchange him with the new-born daughter of Nanda and Yashoda. Vasudeva lifted the baby in a basket and stepped out into a raging storm. As Vasudeva crossed the flooded Yamuna, the great serpent Sheshnag rose behind him and spread his hoods like an umbrella to protect the child from the rain. According to the tradition, the Yamuna itself parted to make way for Vasudeva.
He reached Gokul, laid Krishna beside Yashoda, took her infant daughter and returned to the cell, where the chains and doors closed again as before. That is how Krishna, born in Mathura, came to be raised in Gokul and Vrindavan, in the land where I was born.

Today, devotees can visit the prison cell where these events took place within the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex, also known as Shri Krishna Janmasthan, at Katra Keshav Dev in the heart of Mathura.
At its centre is the Garbha Griha, a small, low chamber, the actual birthplace, where pilgrims descend to offer prayers at the exact spot, marked by a shrine. Around it stand the grand Keshavdeva Temple and the Bhagavata Bhavan, a hall depicting Krishna’s leelas, along with smaller shrines and Potra Kund nearby. The complex has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries and it sits beside the Shahi Idgah, which is why its security is so strict today.

Rules and what to know before you visit

The birthplace has some of the strictest security of any temple in India, because of the sensitivity of the site. The temple strictly prohibits mobile phones, cameras, and other electronic devices inside the complex. Leave these items at the cloakroom outside before you go through the security check, and carry as little as possible. The temple also prohibits photography throughout the complex. You can enter the temple free of charge, but you should wear modest, traditional clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
