Quick answer
Mansi Ganga is a sacred lake in the middle of Govardhan town, Mathura district, about 22 km from Mathura. By tradition, when the people of Braj wished to travel to bathe in the River Ganga, Krishna summoned the Ganga to Govardhan by his mind, manas, so they need not leave Braj, which is why it is called Mansi Ganga. It is the practical starting and ending point of the 21 km Govardhan Parikrama and its stone ghats hold a peaceful evening aarti with floating lamps. Entry is free and being an open lake it has no fixed gates. The Chakleshwar Mahadev and Mukut Mukharvind shrines stand on its banks. To include it in your Govardhan visit, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The story of Mansi Ganga

This is the story that gives the lake its name and it is a tender one. One day, Nanda Baba, Yashoda and the people of Braj decided to travel to bathe in the holy River Ganga, as pilgrims do. Krishna, not wanting them to leave the sacred land of Braj, which the holy rivers themselves come to serve, resolved in his mind to bring the Ganga to them. As soon as the thought arose in his mind, the Ganga appeared in her subtle, mental form at the foothills of Giriraj Govardhan. In the morning, the astonished Brajwasis found the Ganga waiting for them at Govardhan and Krishna explained that they need never leave Braj, for all the tirthas come here. Because she was summoned by the mind, manas, the lake is called Mansi Ganga and the Ganga is believed to reside here especially on the Amavasya of Kartik month.

What to see at Mansi Ganga

Mansi Ganga is more than a lake; it is the devotional heart of Govardhan town. Its large stone ghats, built in 1637 by Raja Bhagwan Das of Amer with steps added later by Raja Man Singh, descend into still water where pilgrims bathe and float lamps. On its banks stand the Chakleshwar Mahadev shrine, the guardian Shiva of Govardhan, where a daily evening lamp ritual is held and the Mukut Mukharvind temple with its beautiful deity of Krishna. A boat ride on the lake and the evening aarti are the two experiences not to miss. For the story of the hill itself, read our history of Govardhan and why Krishna lifted it.

Mansi Ganga and the Govardhan Parikrama

For most pilgrims, Mansi Ganga is where the Govardhan Parikrama begins. While the traditional starting point is Mathura’s Vishram Ghat, the practical start and end point that modern pilgrims use is Mansi Ganga, in the centre of Govardhan town. From here the 21 km circuit passes Mukharvind, Govind Kund, Punchari ka Lota, Radha Kund, Shyam Kund and Kusum Sarovar before returning to the lake. So a visit to Mansi Ganga and the start of the parikrama go hand in hand.

Location and how to reach

Mansi Ganga is in the centre of Govardhan town, easy to reach as part of a Govardhan visit.

From Distance and mode
Govardhan town centre At the heart of the town
Mathura Junction About 22 to 24 km, by auto, taxi or cab
Vrindavan About 25 km
Delhi About 167 km, 3 to 4 hours via the Yamuna Expressway

It is reached by road from Mathura or Vrindavan and all the major Govardhan sites are within a few kilometres. Our Mathura to Vrindavan distance and route guide covers the approach and it fits our Gokul and Govardhan combo tour.

Best time to visit

Come for the evening aarti, when lamps float across the still water at sunset, which is Mansi Ganga at its most beautiful. Sharad Purnima and the whole of Kartik month are the most sacred and atmospheric times, with large crowds for the lamp-floating. If you are starting the Govardhan Parikrama, come at dawn instead. Across the year, October to March is the comfortable season in Braj.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. Mansi Ganga is easy to treat as just a parikrama starting point and rush past, but that misses its quiet power. This is the water Krishna brought by thought alone so his people would never have to leave Braj and the evening aarti here, with lamps drifting on the still lake, is one of the most peaceful sights in all of Govardhan. Give it time. Come at sunset, sit on the ghats, float a lamp if you wish and visit the Chakleshwar Mahadev shrine on the bank. Whether you are walking the parikrama or not, this lake rewards the pilgrim who slows down.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and Mansi Ganga is where I began most Govardhan visits. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We time your visit for the evening aarti, arrange a boat on the lake, tell the story of the mind-born Ganga on the ground and connect it to the start of the Govardhan Parikrama. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you are walking the Govardhan Parikrama, begin at Mansi Ganga at dawn, when the lake is calm and the marg is cool. If you are not walking it, come instead at sunset for the evening aarti, when lamps float across the water and visit Chakleshwar Mahadev on the bank. Either way, do not rush this lake; it is the quiet heart of Govardhan.
