What sets Radha Raman apart is that the deity was never carved. It is swayambhu, self-manifested and the story behind it is one of the most loved in Vrindavan.

Gopala Bhatta Goswami and the twelve shaligrams

Gopala Bhatta Goswami, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan and a close associate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, travelled on the Lord’s instruction to the Kali-Gandaki River in Nepal. When he dipped his waterpot, twelve Shaligram shilas entered it. He worshipped these sacred stones with intense devotion, but he longed to serve the Lord in a form he could dress and adorn. On the full moon day of Vaishakha in 1542, in answer to his prayer, one of the shilas manifested as the beautiful standing form of Krishna, Radha Raman, “the one who gives pleasure to Radha.” That appearance day is still celebrated every year with a grand abhishek, bathing the deity in milk and other offerings.

Instead, her name and a crown are placed beside Krishna, since in the tradition the name and the person are held to be non-different.
