Quick answer
Chintaharan Mahadev, meaning the remover of worries, is an ancient Shiva temple on the Yamuna at Chintaharan Ghat, near Brahmand Ghat, in Gokul-Mahavan, about 15 km from Mathura. Its deity is a Swayambhu, self-manifested, Shiva Linga said to contain over a thousand smaller lingas. By tradition, Shiva came here from Kailash to see the baby Krishna but was turned away by Yashoda, who feared his fierce form; when the child would not settle, she brought Krishna to him and Shiva, receiving darshan, removed Yashoda’s worry, hence the name. Entry is free and the temple is open morning and evening. To include it in your Gokul visit, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

I was born in Gokul, so this temple has always been close to home. In the quiet lanes of Gokul-Mahavan, beside the Yamuna, stands a Shiva temple with one of the tenderest stories in all of Braj: this is where Lord Shiva came down from Kailash to see the infant Krishna and where he removed the worry from Yashoda’s heart. Here, from a guide born in this very town, is the verified Chintaharan Mahadev timing, the story, the aarti and how to reach it, with the key details in tables. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour Package, which can include Gokul.

The story of Chintaharan Mahadev

This is the story that gives the temple its name. When Krishna was born and secretly brought to Gokul, Lord Shiva, far away on Mount Kailash, longed to see the infant form of the Supreme Lord. He came down to Gokul as a wandering ascetic, ash-smeared, with matted hair and serpents and arrived at the home of Nanda and Yashoda to ask for darshan of the child. But Yashoda, looking at his fearsome form, was afraid that her baby would be frightened and she would not let him near. Saddened, Shiva withdrew and sat nearby in meditation.

Then the child Krishna, who is the Lord of all, began to cry and would not be consoled, no matter what Yashoda did. The wise ones understood: the baby was crying for the darshan of his own great devotee, Shiva. So Yashoda brought Krishna out to him. Shiva at last received the darshan he had come so far for, the baby settled at once and with that, all of Yashoda’s worry was lifted. Because Mahadev removed her chinta, her worry, he came to be worshipped here as Chintaharan Mahadev. In another telling, Nanda and Yashoda prayed to Mahadev at this spot for a son and were blessed with Krishna. Either way, this is the temple where Shiva takes away the worries of his devotees.

Why pilgrims come

For the people of Braj, Chintaharan Mahadev is exactly what the name says: the place you bring your worries. Devotees come to lay their fears and troubles before the Swayambhu Linga and pray for them to be lifted, just as Yashoda’s were. It is also a beautiful example of the Braj tradition in which Shiva is honoured alongside Krishna, so even pilgrims who come only for Krishna almost always stop here. The temple sits in a quiet, old-world corner of Gokul-Mahavan by the Yamuna, far from the crowds of the famous shrines. See how it fits the wider route in our places to see in Vrindavan and Mathura guide.

Best time to visit

Come in the quiet of a morning, when Gokul is at its most peaceful, as part of your Gokul circuit. For Shiva devotees, Mahashivratri and the Mondays of Sawan are the most powerful days, though busier. Across the year, October to March is the comfortable season in Braj. Because the temple sits by the Yamuna, the early light here is especially lovely.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Gokul. Chintaharan is small and quiet and it is easy to overlook on a Krishna-focused trip, but it holds one of the sweetest stories in all of Braj and a very human promise: that you can leave your worries here. Do not rush it. Take the darshan slowly, hear the story of Shiva coming for the baby Krishna, sit a moment by the Yamuna at Chintaharan Ghat and the place does something quiet to the heart. Visit it on your Gokul morning, alongside Brahmand Ghat and the Chaurasi Khamba and you will understand why even Krishna’s own town makes room for Shiva.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul, so I grew up with this temple and its story. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We bring you to Chintaharan in the calm morning as part of the Gokul circuit, tell the story of Shiva and the baby Krishna on the ground where it happened and pair it with Brahmand Ghat and the other Gokul stops. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: visit Chintaharan Mahadev together with Brahmand Ghat and the Chaurasi Khamba in one quiet Gokul morning, since they sit close together by the Yamuna. Take the darshan slowly and leave your worries at Mahadev’s feet, as Yashoda did. On an ordinary morning it is one of the most peaceful corners in all of Braj.
