Mathura or Vrindavan, Where to Base Yourself
Most pilgrims should stay in Vrindavan, but not all, so let me be clear about the choice.

The Areas of Vrindavan, and Who Each Suits
Vrindavan is not one place to stay. There are several, and they are very different.

The single biggest decision is old town versus Raman Reti. The old town puts you within walking distance of Banke Bihari, Radha Raman and the heart of Vrindavan, but the rooms are simpler and cars cannot reach your door. Raman Reti gives you a proper modern hotel with parking and space, but you will drive or take an e-rickshaw to the old town temples.
Neither is wrong. It depends entirely on what you value, and that is exactly the judgment a good operator makes for you.
Hotels Near Banke Bihari Temple
This is the most searched accommodation area in Vrindavan, and for good reason. Banke Bihari is the most visited temple, and being able to walk to it for the morning darshan, before the crowds and the heat, is worth a great deal.
What to expect here. Guest houses and smaller hotels rather than large properties, because the old town lanes cannot fit big buildings or car access. Rooms are generally simpler. What you are buying is the location, the ability to step out and be at the temple in minutes.
The honest trade off. Cars cannot reach most of these places. You will be dropped nearby and walk the last stretch with your luggage, and the lanes are crowded. For a fit pilgrim who wants to be in the heart of it, this is perfect. For a family with elderly parents and heavy bags, it can be hard.

Hotels Near Prem Mandir and ISKCON
This is where most families should stay, and it is what I recommend for the majority of my guests.
The Raman Reti area, around Prem Mandir and ISKCON, is the modern side of Vrindavan. The roads are wider, hotels have parking, rooms are larger and better equipped, and there is space to breathe. This is where you find the mid range and premium hotels, including the town’s few well known larger properties.
Why it works for families. You can arrive by car and reach your hotel door. There is parking. The rooms suit families and elderly guests. Prem Mandir and ISKCON, two of the most accessible temples, are within walking distance or a very short ride. And the old town temples are a ten minute e-rickshaw away when you want them.
The trade off. You are not in the old town, so Banke Bihari and Radha Raman are a short ride rather than a walk. For most families that is a fair exchange for a proper night’s rest.

Staying Near Premanand Ji Maharaj’s Ashram
A growing number of pilgrims now plan their stay specifically around Shri Hit Radha Keli Kunj, the ashram of Premanand Ji Maharaj, in the Raman Reti area.
Because his satsang sessions are very early, staying close by matters. A hotel or guest house within walking distance of the ashram means you can reach the pre-dawn sessions without arranging transport in the small hours. Where to Stay in Mathura
Mathura has fewer hotels than Vrindavan and fewer premium options, but it makes sense for some pilgrims.
Stay in Mathura if you have an early train from Mathura Junction, or your visit centres on Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and the Mathura ghats. The main hotels cluster near the Junction and in the Krishna Janmabhoomi area.
Do not stay in Mathura if your trip is really about the Vrindavan temples, because you will commute 12 km each way for most of your darshan.

For many pilgrims, a dharamshala or ashram is not a budget compromise but a preference, and I understand why.
Staying in an ashram places you inside the devotional rhythm of Braj. You wake to bells and bhajans, the food is simple sattvic prasad, and the atmosphere is entirely different from a hotel. Many are run by temple trusts and religious organisations, and rooms can be very inexpensive, sometimes under ₹500.
What to know. Facilities are basic. Rooms may be shared or simple, hot water may be limited, and there are often rules, such as gates closing early and no non vegetarian food anywhere on the premises. Book directly or through the managing trust, and confirm what is included.
For a devotee whose trip is about sadhana rather than comfort, this is often the truest way to stay in Braj. For a family with young children or elderly parents who need reliable comfort, a mid range hotel is usually kinder.

A few honest things to check before you book anything in Braj.
Look for: – Distance to the temples you care about, measured in walking or driving minutes, not kilometres. – Genuine parking, if you are arriving by car, since old town properties often have none. – Hot water, which is not guaranteed at every budget property. – Recent, specific reviews mentioning cleanliness and the actual location. – Whether meals are included, and whether the kitchen is pure vegetarian, which most Braj properties are.
Be wary of: – Photos that look far grander than the price suggests. – Vague location claims like “near all temples,” which usually means near none. – Anyone at the property offering to arrange VIP darshan, which is not a real thing. – Non refundable bookings months ahead, when timings and plans can change.

Choose the Raman Reti or Prem Mandir area, not the old town. Your parents should not be walking through crowded lanes with luggage. A hotel with car access to the door, parking, a lift or ground floor room, and reliable hot water is worth far more than being a few metres closer to Banke Bihari.
Confirm the practical things. Ask about a lift if the room is not on the ground floor, about the walk from where the car drops you, and about a restaurant on site so they do not have to go out for every meal.
